About the Image(s)

I photographed this fallen tree with leaves for my camera club’s challenge to capture autumn. It was amazing to see a dead tree with such vibrant red leaves. I’ve started a Flourish in Place collection to symbolize growth wherever you find yourself in life. Be it physical, mental, spiritual etc. The tree brings to mind the Biblical Scripture Philippians 4:11,13. …whatsoever state I am in be content. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

I edited in photoshop using the saturation slider to remove all colors but red. I also masked the tree to enhance details.

I love what you did here!
It is so much more interesting with the red on b/w. I feel like a this is part of a fairy tale.   Posted: 12/08/2024 16:40:21

Sylvia, Thank you for your comments. I'm going to work on blurring out the background to enhance the red.   Posted: 12/14/2024 00:22:42

Yvonne, converting this to black and white was a good choice. Looking at the original, the red tones of the leaves do not stand out as much. If you are going to try to blur out the background a little, you may also want to add a little more light to some of the red leaves that are in shadow to get them more even with brighter red tones. Just an idea, anyway. Nice photo.   Posted: 12/15/2024 21:04:05

Randy, Thank you for your comments. The blur with the leaf lightening would enhance the image.   Posted: 12/19/2024 16:28:54

Yvonne, Thanks for your detailed description of your idea behind the image. I have an idea of what you mean, even if I'm not biblically literate. In this case it is the red leaves that have found their place on a dead tree and continue to grow there. That is quite unusual, as you would expect to see young green leaves.
You have definitely succeeded in making the symbolism visible, the black and white conversion is ideal for this.
My first thought was to leave the actual format as it is, but the longer I look at the photos side by side, the more I like the square.

I was wondering if you masked the leaves to pop the color -- and like the idea of reducing every color except the one you want. Lots of ways to address it.

Did you consider cropping a bit of the bottom to have the diagonal branch come out of the corner? I know I'm a little orderly for my own good -- but that's where my eye went!   Posted: 12/16/2024 19:26:53

Douglas, For the red pop of color I didn't mask but desaturated all colors but red. If you want to try on a photo, move your saturation slider in the negative direction to remove colors then move slider in the positive direction to add color/colors of your choice.

I did crop some of the bottom branch. But stopped to preserve the red leaves on the ground . Thank you for your comments.   Posted: 12/19/2024 16:45:47

Washington Park is a beautiful and unique space to find excellent images like this one.

Philippians 4:10-13 is my favorite Scripture because it describes life's ups and downs and how one must bend to the moment you're in at present and not to despair. The North Star is Faith in Christ.

Your image is cropped beautifully and tells the strong story that life is eternal and that God is in control.   Posted: 12/19/2024 18:29:07
