Sunflowers in Winter by Marcus Miller

March 2025 - Sunflowers in Winter

About the Image(s)

This image was taken from the side of the road since the snow bank was too deep to climb through. I cropped all around to bring attention to the subject. Minor adjustments in LR.
ISO 200, 19mm, f16, s1600.

Since you named it 'Sunflowers in Winter' I would crop the image to just keep the sunflowers in the snow.   Posted: 03/16/2025 19:21:37

Lovely scene - even if the sunflowers look rather miserable! I think the background adds context.   Posted: 03/22/2025 10:25:21

I find it compelling and sad that the sunflowers have captured snow instead of sunlight. Wonderfully bleak, with good repetition of vertical elements.
(Edit)
Also, including all that space to the left of your subjects sidelines them in a way that enhances their appearance of misery. Nice job on this. I do hope you also captured one of just the sunflowers though, as Pinaki suggested. I saw an image this morning that reminded me of these sunflowers. It was a burnt forest, but each tree was framed separately, all the frames lined up, with some up/down variations that added interest (for me). Here's a link if you want to take a look (I think it is temporary): https://photoplacegallery.com/online-juried-shows/ruins-and-remnants/gallery/exhibition-gallery#lg=exhibition-gallery&slide=6

Hi Ken, thx for your comments. The linked pic is very inspiring for taking a fresh look at typical subjects.

The sunflowers caught my attention bec they stood out against the snow and normally they would have blended into the winter field colours. I couldn't take many pics that day. I had stopped at the edge of the road and the snow was about 4' high so I could move around to other angles. I was not about to climb into the snow and wallow around for a better angle.

One of my other images had the sunflowers without the farm house in the background and it was too bland and didn't tell a story.

Last week the snow melted and the sunflowers were insignificant again. Glad you enjoyed.   Posted: 03/28/2025 00:29:05
