Waiting for a train by Judith Flacke

April 2026 - Waiting for a train

About the Image(s)

I had the opportunity to go to London for a couple of days and fully took the opportunity to take images unavailable in rural North Devon! I also reminded myself how much I like really dark blacks! :)

Judith - this is truly a fabulously interesting image - it's compelling and delivers a sense of aloneness and even mystery. It's also a great composition. Its strength is obvious - the curved leading line to the lone figure waiting for the train. That said, I spent a bit of time with my VF and really opened the shadows - I wanted to preserve the great mood you captured but at the same time the image needed detail in the tunnel, rails, and brickwork to create depth and guide the eye more effectively.

As presented, it almost felt like half an image with the entire tunnel area almost completely dark, when in fact it had a ton of detail and structure that's essential to the story. I tried to balance its mystery with readability, by providing more context that enhanced the lone figure rather than isolating him in a void. I did a LOT of dodging and burning (mostly very slightly) including giving more detail to the man waiting on the platform by increasing the exposure. As I said, this is a fascinating image and wanted to give it greater visual impact to hold the viewer's attention a bit longer.

Seriously, it's these types of candid and graphic city shots that win competitions - just outstanding Judith, just outstanding   Posted: 04/02/2026 13:13:17

I, too, like images with a great deal of black, but I like pure black. While Butch has good ideas about opening up the detail, I suggest experimenting with the opposite and seeing how this looks if you push the dark areas to even darker black.   Posted: 04/05/2026 17:33:47

Interesting.... Never sure of how dark to go. Here the curves look great brought out but I will look at more graphic/black. Ta. :)   Posted: 04/05/2026 18:38:08

One image so many different opinions....but one thing is clear... you have a great image...as it can be interpreted in more ways than one. On this one I will move away from Butch's interpretation which itself stands on a strong ground. In my opinion the human subject is the main element with the lights in the ceiling and the curve of the platform being the leading lines. Everything else distracts. My eyes should stay on the three elements above with just a hint of the environment without taking away anything from the above three. My version included herewith.   Posted: 04/13/2026 19:08:09

This is an interesting image, although there some distractions. It has got interesting leading lines and the mood is well set. Butch opened the shadows and I personally find it better.   Posted: 04/14/2026 12:24:04

I really like the image and there are already several options presented above. I like that Butch made the man brighter and also like that Hoshedar made the image darker.

Butch brought out a lot of detail in the left side of the image, but to me that is not needed as we know what is there and reduces the mystery.

Hoshedar made the whole image darker which to me adds mystery to the image.

So, I selected the man and the area around him and made it a touch brighter and then inverted the selection and made the rest of the image a bit darker.   Posted: 04/16/2026 21:52:37

So many options! Thanks! All good fun and grist to the mill....I will play more and maybe even end up with a 'final' image! :)   Posted: 04/17/2026 07:05:28
