Hummingbird and Almond Blossoms by Barbara Mallon

February 2025 - Hummingbird and Almond Blossoms

About the Image(s)

I live in a former almond orchard. I like to take photos of birds in the flowers every spring. I really liked the way this hummingbird guards his territory from the bud at the top of the tree. It is quite a ways up, so this is a small part of the image taken with the Canon r5Mark2 with an EOS 100-400 L lens and a 1.4 extender and the eos adapter to the camera. I considered removing the twig on the right.

Great shot but I'd suggest some tweaks. The bird needs to be the main subject so draw the eye most. So I brightened his chest area as it was getting pretty dark. I also darkened the flowers a bit as they seemed over-bright compared to the bird. The bottom right flower I removed as it was again very bright, and drew the eye away from the main subject. I think this highlights the bird better...?   Posted: 02/13/2025 10:56:01

Barbara, it's a very nice, simple image, however, I thought it was a bit busy and that the hummingbird needed to have the dark area around its throat opened up a bit to get some detail.

I sharpened, flipped and removed much of what I felt was unnecessary busyness.   Posted: 02/13/2025 15:10:37

Great shot, to have the hummingbird sitting still and the lovely flowers below it. The blue sky background it great, and you have good depth of field. I like what Judith did with the image.

I like flipping the image that Butch did, it helps a lot with the composition to move the bird into the upper right, and then the stem is a great lead-in. However, I would leave the branch, now on the left. I think that it adds balance to the bird.   Posted: 02/14/2025 20:26:59
