About the Image(s)

Taken with: iPhone 15Pro ISO 25 84mm f2.8 1/291 sec

I took this photo on safari in South Africa last year. I probably shot 25 images of these jackals with my Canon 100-400mm on my R3, but this litter of jackal pups got so close to our vehicle, that I took out my iPhone to get some video and a couple quick shots. I really like the shadow in this image, foretelling of the wild animal he will be come. Pup is probably 4 weeks old here. I brought up the black a little and cropped in slightly. I’m curious how you all would edit this simple shot further.

Lighting, placement of the photo and the cuteness of the fox cub are great. The diagonal composition draws attention to the photo as well. I would not change a thing.   Posted: 02/12/2025 23:31:50

Love the image and the composition. The shadow is great. However, I would crop away something of the background as it adds little to the image. I also find it is rather over saturated, so I have desaturated the image so the cub is more golden than red. See what you think. :)   Posted: 02/13/2025 10:44:29

Tomi - this is a very nice minimalist image and I think it's the cub's shadow that gives this image its impact, and I like it as is. However, you asked...

See my VF, I wanted to go lower left to upper right so I flipped the image in addition to cropping in a bit - would like your thoughs   Posted: 02/13/2025 14:59:11

The jackal now seems to be walking out of the image, so I like the image without being flipped.   Posted: 02/14/2025 20:05:42

Very nice image of this young jackal, and has been stated above, it is the shadow that really makes this image. The composition is great, and you caught it with its head turned toward the camera. I like the tighter crop that Judith made, and the lowering of the saturation.

However, the color of the dirt, to me, is a distraction. I went to Hues/Saturation, selected the color of the dirt, and greatly desaturated it. The color of the jackal is more yellow, so its color was not changed as much. I then painted on the mask with black, to bring back the full color of the jackal. You could not do this if you want to use it in a PSA nature salon. What do you think?   Posted: 02/14/2025 19:57:30
