December 2024 - Lunch Sorted

About the Image(s)

This image was taken on my recent trip to a resort in the northern part of the country. I spotted this heron hunting for fish in the shallow waters of the Gulf. I did not have my long lens and so had to manage at 400 mm. I had to crop the image a bit to get the subject to be the main focus element. Unfortunately, the sunlight was a bit harsh. But I am glad I got this image as the fish was swallowed up in less than 2 seconds after it was caught.

The image was shot on my Z9, on a 28-400 Nikkor Z lens, aperture F9, shutter speed 1/2000 (had to keep it a bit higher as I was hoping it would fly with the fish in its beak), ISO 400.

Not sure if the image is an accurate depiction of nature and if it will do well in a salon. Frank and forthright creative criticism is what I am looking for. Thank you.

This is a solid shot Hoshedar - sharp, good detail, well-exposed and a good composition. In my PSA competitions & exhibitions course my instructor said

"Impact, Visual Interest, and Storytelling are the fundamental characteristics that most often succeed in competitions; thus, these three aspects of an image need to be the hook that grabs and keeps the viewer's attention and outweigh any minor technical deficiencies.

1. Impact - is the ability of an image to immediately grab the viewer's attention.
2. Visual Interest - Is a matter of subject selection, for example, an image of a Bengal tiger is going to be far more interesting than a similarly composed image of a common housecat. Visual interest means the subject itself must be something that a uniformed viewer will take the time to study and consider.
3. Storytelling is a first cousin to visual interest and conveys the emotion and significance of the moment.

...and that's the guide I use when submitting images into competitions - I hope that helps to answer your question

This seems to be bird month. I like your image! you could select the bird and do a mid tone contrast adjustment. You could crop it tighter.   Posted: 12/13/2024 04:35:04

I applied a little 'Dynamic contrast' to the bird and did a little cropping. And here is the result. Your opinion please.   Posted: 12/13/2024 12:58:54

Thank you Gaetan. The bird is much improved after you added the contrast and removed negative space. Much appreciated.   Posted: 12/20/2024 09:53:49

You captured the bird at the perfect moment with the fish in the mouth. The bird is very sharp and the lighting and surroundings are very good. I do like the adjustments that Gaetan made.   Posted: 12/15/2024 22:02:00
