About the Image(s)

Cannon 1DX ??“ Canon 24-105 @ 82mm ??“- ISO 800 ??“ f4.5 - 1/25th second

A number of years ago I had the opportunity to photograph a training exercise for the Vail Valley Fire Department in Vail, CO. The firemen had been putting out smaller test fires fueled by various combustibles since about noon on a very warm August day. The final exercise was to extinguish a large man-made fire that would test the skills of the entire battalion. I took this shot at 7:24 PM and as you can see on the young firefighter’s face, he was exhausted and perhaps a bit despondent because as the battalion commander cried out, shortly after this shot was taken ??“ “OK guys, let’s pack it in, we lost this one.” It was a most interesting experience, and I gained a whole new appreciation for what these young men do as a matter of course. (sorry, no lady firefighters in this battalion)

You captured photo journalism at its core. Yes! Firefighting is not at all easy and it is exhausting and dangerous. He looks very disappointed at losing the building. It is all there. The blaze behind him adds immensely.   Posted: 12/13/2024 04:44:55

Thank you for your comments Barbara, it was a truly fascinating and most interesting experience - here's an adjunct to the story - I blew this shot up and added it to my "Wall of Fame" that I had in our previous house and we had Comcast come by to handle a cable connection issue when the young Comcast rep he asked me how did I come to have his brother's photo on my wall - small world sometimes :-)   Posted: 12/13/2024 13:12:52

I really like the facial expression of the firefighter: disappointment, a work partially done. The title matches the image.   Posted: 12/13/2024 11:52:21

This is a really great image. The expression of the fire fighter and the fire behind him are very dramatic. The slight tilt of his head adds to the story. The fact that there is water dripping down on him adds to the image. I am glad that you made a print from the image. I can offer nothing to improve the image.   Posted: 12/15/2024 22:27:25

Amazing image. The expression on the face, the freezing of the dropping water, the bright colours of the fire in the background and yet well lit face of an exhausted fire fighter have all come together very nicely. I just adjusted the contrast a bit to bring out the black in his uniform. Very well done indeed. I hope you will enter it in a salon or competition.   Posted: 12/20/2024 09:47:35
