The Engaged Artist by Hoshedar Cooper

November 2024 - The Engaged Artist

About the Image(s)

Shot on my Z8, shutter speed 1/320, aperture F6, ISO 320. This was shot on my last trip to Romania. The artist was performing near a photo exhibition where our images were being exhibited. I admired the passion with which she was playing the violin. I shot many pictures of her but I liked what the monochrome version looked like. Need frank feedback on the image and what can be done to improve it. Thank you.

Hoshedar - when environmental portraiture is done well it's spectacular. Good photos begin with good subject and this is pretty close to perfection when it comes to impact and visual interest. To answer your question, I'm not skilled enough in PS to do this image justice but in my VF I "tried" to give you and idea of how you could take full advantage of the subject by separating your subject from a distracting background. I canted the image slightly to take advantage of the bow, as I thought it might have more impact if it led the viewer's eye more towards the upper right corner of the frame instead of off to the side - wow, this image is dynamite - in my VF I also brightened/whitened the subject's eye sclera and teeth   Posted: 11/10/2024 12:12:38

I like the facial expression of the lady: she is playing with passion.Using a larger aperture and focussing on the face perhaps would have blurred the background more and thus less distractions. the conversion to B/W is well done.   Posted: 11/12/2024 05:11:24

Really nice image, and I like the monochrome. The image is very sharp and there is great lighting. Like Gaetan said, she has a great expression. I like the angle shift that Butch made but think that he cropped in too much on the left and did not leave enough in the background. I also tried to select the woman and blur the background some more. I see that I did miss part of the violin and lost some hair. Using a full resolution image would make a better selection of the woman.   Posted: 11/14/2024 20:21:07

Monochrome is great. Composition, the gvoiolimist a violin and depth of field. I would have removed the electronic gismo in post prossesing. It really takes away from the pictorial impact. Unless of course it is part of the story for street photography.   Posted: 11/15/2024 18:05:56

Lovely image. I would try and lighten and/or blur the background a bit - just to make her stand out a bit more. But otherwise great! :)   Posted: 11/18/2024 09:05:23
