July 2024 - Beach Artist

About the Image(s)

This image was captured at VA Beach last year by mobile phone. This artist was creating an acrylic impasto painting using only piping bags. The way she painted was like a cake decorating technique that interested me. Please provide me with your comments.

Lieu-Hanh, your image this month tells a good story and is a nice travel narrative. I notice you've been doing a lot of "phone-ography" lately and the results are remarkable. The exposure is well balanced and the image is sharp. Filling the frame with your subject holds my eye and my attention.   Posted: 07/08/2024 04:14:42

Thanks for your comments, Michael!
It is great for getting the shot when the phone camera is what I have available at that moment. I did ask her permission for the photo shoot.   Posted: 07/22/2024 19:50:27

Kieu-Hanh, I like the interplay between the artist and her artwork. You've captured the vibrant colors of her work. However, my eye doesn't stop at just the artwork, since the piece is inverted. You've also captured the unique look of the artist with details such as the paint on her leg. The blurred background gives a sense of place while letting the focus stay on the artist. If I look for any improvement, it would be that the artist's profile could be a bit sharper. That's just a small detail though. I like your lively "street scene" capture!   Posted: 07/11/2024 17:09:23

Interesting and well-captured moment. It evokes so many questions. Why are there two paintings on top of each other? What exactly is she doing? (Thanks for explaining.) Why does she have paint on her leg? My initial thought was that there was too much stuff around her and it was distracting. But after a couple more views I came to the conclusion that it is necessary to the whole of the photo. Nice work.   Posted: 07/11/2024 20:11:02

Andres, Thanks for pointing out your detailed observation, such as: two paintings on top of each other, paint even on her leg, etc… I did not notice that until I read your comments.
I guess that since she painted with piping bags and she did not have a rotating stand (like a cake turntable), she might need a bigger painting to do so, and she got paint even on her leg because she might need to change to different directions to paint it. Just my thoughts!   Posted: 07/22/2024 20:33:15

Kieu-Hanh, what a great moment to capture..an artist at work. I appreciate your explanation of her technique. Although the subject fills the frame, I can see she is working on a beach. And she sports artwork through the tattoos. Very nice travel/street photography.   Posted: 07/15/2024 23:29:10

This is also unusual photo. You caught the artist in the shade while her work is emblazoned by the sun. She is wearing black which also makes her secondary to her work of art. It looks like she may be painting her view of the background buildings as some of the colors match. The angle you chose is perfect, emphasizing the artwork and making the artist a secondary element in the image. I really like your composition and the story is educational for at least me. I never had heard of using the cake-decorating method to produce a painting. Nice work. I have no suggestions for improvement.   Posted: 07/16/2024 21:28:14
