July 2026 - Just Dance

About the Image(s)

I had the opportunity to do a study shoot of some young dancers. I do not take a lot of people shots and rarely do studio work so this was different. This was a lot of fun as the girls loved dancing and loved getting their picture taken.

This was shot with my Canon R5 and the Canon 24-70 lens. I shot this at 50mm, 1/200 shutter, 160 ISO and 2 strobes. I had to go wider than I wanted to with this dancer as she had lots of scope and took up the frame. I hope to return and do another shoot with them sometime.

Cindy, wow! I am amazed at the clarity here at 1/200 shutter speed! You captured a great dance move with her hair flying yet sharp. You may want to take down the highlights on the right side as the eye tends to go there first and maybe bring out the shadow under her left foot so the viewer can see some context from where she lifts. What a great opportunity and nice image!   Posted: 07/05/2026 20:33:36

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I agree I had a strobe on the right side and she was lit up from that side. I would have preferred to have had her facing the light. This was a group of young girls and they were freely jumping and moving around and sometimes you have to just get the shot. However, doing a little more work in post can improve some of the blow out areas.   Posted: 07/06/2026 01:34:58

Cindy, your action shot of the dancer has such vitality and life. It is surprising that your shutter speed of 1/200 gave this degree of clarity. Thanks for describing your use of the strobe light. That explains the brightness behind the dancer. I think in Lightroom or PhotoShop you could adjust the bright areas to add a bit more detail and definition to blown areas. While I like the girl's swirling hair on the top and back of her head, I'd prefer that her hair not be in her face. Perhaps a bit of cloning could remove the hair that right in her face. This looks like an exciting opportunity to capture young dancers in action!   Posted: 07/09/2026 19:18:04

Wow! Well done! Thanks for telling us about the strobe. I like how her legs for a diagonal line across the frame and how her arms form a triangle. I hope that you will be able to return and capture more images of the dancers.   Posted: 07/09/2026 23:43:18

Hi Cindy,
You've captured a nice action shot of the dancer! You anticipated well her jump when she reached full extension with her hair flying upward. The image is sharp and the clean background also makes the subject pop.
I'd prefer to adjust the light on her left leg in post processing since it's a bit overexposed. Nice shot!   Posted: 07/12/2026 16:11:17
