About the Image(s)

Another shot from my trip to Piemonte, Italy this past fall. The region is a major wine producing region, not so much in quantity but quality. It is the home of Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebiolo. You cannot drive anywhere without having vineyards in sight. I took this from the side of the road.

I shot this with a Canon 90D, 24-105mm lens at 24 mm focal length, f/8 at 1/125 sec and ISO 100. The original was far from what I wanted out of the shot and needed a lot of work in Lightroom. I first adjusted exposure, highlights, whites, shadows, and toned down the sort of blown out white sky. I brought up the greens and then used masks to bring down the sky and pull up clouds. I cropped to reduce the bottom fence but still use it as a frame. I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Hi Andres,
You have captured dramatic low angle image of the vines. It creates a sense of height and wonder. The vines serve as leading lines that draw the viewer 's eyes upward to the scene. I especially like the diagonal of the vines, and the shadows on it that add depth to the scene.
Dark grey clouds in the distance signify heavy overcast conditions and look a bit gloomy. I'd prefer to enhance the color of clouds to add more joy to the image. Great shot!   Posted: 04/06/2026 13:07:58

Kieu-Hanh, a visitor to our section also disliked the sky. I made it a bit lighter. I posted it in response to her comments below. What do you think now?   Posted: 04/08/2026 02:40:12

Andres, you've taken a somber view of the vineyards and enriched the color, adding life to the scene. The angling lines of the vineyard draw the eye into the scene to help notice the distant hill of more vineyards. The detail of the two trees at the upper right third adds interest. Andres, your processing has enlivened the scene. Nicely done.   Posted: 04/07/2026 15:25:32

Bev, thanks for visiting and for your kind remarks. You and Kieu-Hanh of this group, have both mentioned not liking the sky for different reasons. The sky in the original was basically just very white. I think I may have gone a bit to far on the linear gradient and made the clouds too dark. Or as Kieu-Hanh said - gloomy. Your suggestion completely replaced the existing sky with an interesting golden hue. I am not sure the golden clouds go well with the long shadows cast over the middle of the vineyard. But an interesting idea. Given both your comments, I went back and made the sky a little lighter.   Posted: 04/08/2026 02:38:15

Andres, what a beautiful capture of this vineyard. We have areas near us in the foothills and I have never been able to get something this lovely. The light and shadows from the clouds on the vines are so beautiful. and the lines of grapevines lead my eye into the image, then up into the sky. I like your edited version of the sky very much...you have retained the clouds which cast the shadows and made it work well with the light. Nicely done.   Posted: 04/12/2026 22:29:34

I haven't looked at what the others had to say yet. I find the changes that you made extremely well done, You can tell it's fall, partly by the trees around the field and partly fro the color of the grape vines. A perfect time to photograph there. The composition is excellent also, The only change I might suggest is to cut off the immediate foreground up to the start of the vineyard itself, as it is not so important that we know the edges of the field, but that you can get the feeling it is stretching out forever. Very well done.   Posted: 04/13/2026 20:15:17

Thanks Joan for your comments and suggestions. I struggled with including the foreground bushes and decided to go with the foreground. I liked how it created a bit of a frame for the vineyard. But I think it looks as good with a heavier crop, which I have done here. Do you like this better?   Posted: 04/16/2026 01:59:31
