About the Image(s)

My husband and I visited Yellowstone in February and stayed at Mammoth Hot Springs. In the late afternoon I walked to visit the terraces each day when the clouds of vapor rose high in the sky. The light on the terraces at that time of day was magical.

I used my Canon EOS R6 at 35 mm., f/11, 1/1,000. In Lightroom and PhotoShop, I adjusted the exposure, lights and darks, converted to B&W, and cropped. I look forward to your comments.

Ruth, beautiful photo. Everything you did worked. The cropping eliminated extraneous material. The adjustment of exposure and lights and darks made the trees on the left pop. And the conversion to black and white was spot on.   Posted: 04/07/2026 03:13:41

RFuth, You have made a totally undistinguished image into a winner.I assume a combination of cropping and lightening worked for this.

Ruth, another one of your beautiful scenes! The composition is nice with the crop you chose. The detail/texture in the lower right is interesting. You have captured the vapor nicely and then the trees on the left stand out. Very nicely done.   Posted: 04/12/2026 22:59:38

Ruth, Sorry for all the typos. Was in a hurry and my eyes are bad, as you know. You were mot very specific in what you did in Lightroom, etc. but your final product looks entirely different from the original which had terrible lighting. Job well does,   Posted: 04/13/2026 20:51:38

Joan, I appreciate your comments. As far as my editing in Lightroom and PhotoShop, I increased the exposure, then selected the sky and inverted it to select the foreground. I brightened the foreground even more. I did a mask with a brush to brighten the snow and highlights on the right side. Then with a mask, I darkened the tree trunks. As I mentioned, I converted to B&W (adding contrast) and cropped.

The scene was backlit because of the setting sun. However when I took the picture, I knew I could adjust the lighting.   Posted: 04/14/2026 19:44:23

Hi Ruth,
The conversion to BW is a nice choice since it renders the scene mystical. The color, lighting, and contrast creates a softer, dreamlike look. I especially like the vapor which enhances the atmosphere and gives the viewer a magical feel. Great image!   Posted: 04/16/2026 19:41:15
