Cherry Blossoms at Tidal Basin by Kieu-Hanh Vu

April 2026 - Cherry Blossoms at Tidal Basin

About the Image(s)

This image was taken at the Tidal Basin a few days ago when the cherry blossoms were in peak bloom. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial can be seen in the distance. I love the contrast between the old cherry tree and the soft pink color of the flowers. My question is: Should I keep the image in color or convert it into black and white?

Kieu-Hanh, I like the composition of this photo with the Jefferson Memorial at the bottom third and framed by the cheery blossoms. The colors are a bit lacking. Some post-processing adjustments to brightness and contrast may have brought out the colors a bit more. The pinks of the cherry blossom are hardly noticeable. I prefer this in color.   Posted: 04/07/2026 03:30:19

Kieu-Hanh, the framing of the Jefferson Memorial by the cherry blossoms communicates the iconic Washington DC view. I agree with Andres that the colors of the cherry blossoms and the blues of the water and sky could be enhanced more to provide attractive liveliness to the scene. You could also consider cropping the top of the image to enlarge the memorial and make it a stronger, larger center of interest. With the enhancement of color, I think your color photo would be more attractive than a B&W version.   Posted: 04/07/2026 15:13:08

I appreciate your feedback, Ruth! Thanks for suggesting a tighter crop and color enhancement.   Posted: 04/16/2026 20:04:20

Kieu-Hanh, I have never seen the cherry blossoms in D.C. and it is on my list. I really like your composition framing the Jefferson Memorial with the cherry tree and then more blossoms down the path leading to the Memorial. I agree that with a bit more color this version works well. Because you want the cherry blossoms to stand out, I would prefer color for this subject. I tried to edit a bit in Photoshop to bring out color by using an adjustment layer. I am not sure why my edit looks off with the perspective but you can see the color adjustment. Let me know what you think. Nice image and must be something to see each spring!   Posted: 04/12/2026 22:52:49

Thanks for your comments and your edits, Mary Ann! It brought out more colors to the flowers surrounded the Tidal Basin. Your editing technique in Photoshop is great! I really like the edited version!   Posted: 04/16/2026 20:15:37

I love that you picked the old cherry tree, still valiantly putting out its beautiful pink flowers, and the younger trees further along the Basin. I believe your composition to be good using the old tree as a frame for the rest of the photo. As for color or black and white, I would prefer color as the cherry blossoms are pink and really stand out better in color. However, the easiest way to decide is to just turn it into a monochrome and see how it compares. Nice image, well doe. A very small nit-pic would be to cut in sightly from the right to remove the thin strip of white on the side of the tree.   Posted: 04/15/2026 20:54:40
