Djupivogur Iceland by Andres Valdespino

July 2025 - Djupivogur Iceland

About the Image(s)

Just last week my wife and I went on a cruise around Iceland. It is an incredible place with nature unlike anywhere I've ever been. I knew that the landscape would be there, every day, with fabulous opportunities for photo shoots. Landscape photography has never been my strength. Knowing the possibilities on this trip, I took a couple of online courses on landscape photography to get some guidelines and better ways to think about it. After reviewing the photos I took, I was pleased that the results were better than my previous trips. This one was taken on a nature walk we took in the town of Djupivogur, on the eastern side of the island. I look forward to comments form the group.

I took this shot with a Canon 90D 24-105mm lens, 1/125 sec at f/7.1 ISO 100. I did minimal processing in Lightroom, only darkening the sky a bit.

Andres, I like the mood of Iceland that you've captured in your photo with the openness of the landscape and brooding skies. Catching a bit of the yellow flowers in the foreground adds color to the scene. You've captured layers of the landscape with the two different bodies of water and hills in the background. As I look at the scene, I'm struck by the overall darkness of the view. What time of day did you shoot the photo? It strikes me that with the overcast skies, the landscape may have looked dimly lit. Maybe part of it is the ISO of 100, which is often used on a sunny day. If you want to brighten up the scene a bit, you can bump up the exposure in Lightroom and/or PhotoShop, lightening the highlights and luminosity, adding contrast. What do you think, Andres? In any case, I'm sure you thoroughly enjoyed your visit to Iceland. It's an intriguing place!   Posted: 07/05/2025 22:29:12

Thanks for your comments Ruth. I like your idea of bumping up exposure in Lightroom. I did darken the sky a small bit in Lightroom, because I felt the original sky was too bright. But lightening exposure for the rest would have helped. It was a cloudy day and rained a good deal that day. I am using AUTO ISO but you've given me the idea to check what AUTO is doing on a cloudy day and perhaps adjust. Thanks again.   Posted: 07/10/2025 23:02:09

Andres, This really gives the flavor of Iceland. I have never been. there but have seen many images of it. You ca feel the cold coming through in your image well. I think your biggest problem is that the weather, which does show the climate well, was not on your side for taking an exciting Landscape. This one could be part of a slide show of the island country You might try cutting out most of the sky, which despite the clouds, is bright. and takes away from the land areas. I like that you used a puddle or small lake to get some reflections ad the use of the yellow flowers helps.   Posted: 07/07/2025 17:32:37

Thanks Joan. The weather was definitely not my friend on this trip.   Posted: 07/10/2025 23:02:54

Andres, Iceland is another place on our bucket list. Hope that you'll post some more pics from your visit. You've done a good job of capturing the landscape. Too bad that the sky didn't cooperate. I took a minutes and tried darkening the sky and using dehaze in the Camera Raw filter and then bringing up the shadows in the foreground. I'm not convinced that this is all that much better than your edits. Let me know what you think.   Posted: 07/14/2025 23:09:18

Andres, what a fabulous trip. I have never been to Iceland but I hear it is a nature paradise. I like the perspective of your image and the foreground of the wildflowers and the wet area. It leads my eye right into the image to appreciate the water, mountain and sky. Cloudy skies make for some interesting landscape images, in my opinion. I think you have a nice image here and you can do many edits with it to bring out what you desire to tell your story of the scene.   Posted: 07/15/2025 23:14:29

Hi. Andres,
What a wonderful trip to Iceland in summer when you can enjoy warmest weather and the midnight sun! I have never been to Iceland, and do hope to visit it in the future.
For this image, you have included multiple subjects in the scene, especially the lake and the puddle. I guess that you want the main focus is the puddle in the foreground, with the yellow flowers that add more interest to the scene. I'd prefer to see some reflection of the clouds in the puddle to captivate the viewers' attention. Thanks for sharing your image!   Posted: 07/19/2025 13:29:05
