Taken near my sister’s home on Long Island, I was out finding interesting subjects and was trying ICM, Intentional Camera Motion. This photo was somewhat unusual as I managed to keep some of the leaves sharp, while moving the camera up and down or , at least in one of those directions. I finally figured out that I had given myself enough tine so I got both the motion and a sharper image.of the sub sect, as well. I was probably hadn’t holding as I don’t like carrying a tripod, but it is possible that I had the tripod, which should have helped with this Picture moving the camera down with half a second exposure, and reaching the Botton of my movement so the remainder of the tine was taken just with the picture being held without movement, enough tine to get the leaves sharp, as well. It was taken a long time ago and to try to find the original with at the data, whole take me all day. So I present it with that concept, which may or may not be correct. If you can think of any other way to achieve both motion and stillness in a single frame, please let me know. I have always liked this image although the judges in camera club did not.

Joan, I like how the levels of yellow and greens work with the vertical lines of the trees. I agree that you've found a good balance of shutter speed and aperture to keep some of the detail of branches while blurring the tree trunks. When I've used ICM, I've sometimes used a composite to add sharper objects or details. However, without doing a composite, I think you've done well to keep some detail if that was your intention. I would agree with your observation that ICM photos don't always score well in competitions. Sometimes we can like a particular image we take, even while knowing that the photo won't score well.   Posted: 05/07/2025 17:31:00

Joan, I love this image! It looks very "intentional" - that is to say, planned and thoughtful. The camera movement is precise with perfect verticals. That, combined with some sharpness in the leaves leads me to believe the only way to have achieved this is with a tripod. Beautiful color. Balanced composition and well edited. Simply beautiful. I know what you mean about camera club scores! In my club if it ain't a bird or a landscape, you might as well forget about a high score. It only matters that you like it! Well done and appreciated!   Posted: 05/10/2025 13:07:16
