About the Image(s)
My husband and I traveled to Kauai in October where I took this photo in Allerton Gardens. These Moreton Bay fig trees are enormous. I used my Canon EOS R7 at f/11, 1/80 sec. In Lightroom and PhotoShop, I added contrast, lowered highlights, and converted the photo to b&w. I especially tried to emphasize the trees’ winding roots.

Hi Ruth. I love your B&W rendering! Beautiful tonality and an abundance of elegant leading lines. It is a well conceived and well edited lovely composition.   Posted: 01/06/2025 15:16:00

I love the lines of the roots, which look both artistic and a bit menacing.   Posted: 01/11/2025 15:59:35

You have done a great job on these fig trees, emphasizing the root structure. You especially did good work in removing the bright spot on the original and I think your conversion n to monochrome was an excellent choice. Very nice work. No suggestions for improvement. Our fig tree in our California yard looks very different, but we do appreciate the fruit.   Posted: 01/11/2025 20:13:00

Thanks for your comments, Joan. I'm jealous that you have a fig tree in your yard, since one wouldn't grow where I live.   Posted: 01/20/2025 22:45:37

Ruth, I really like this monochrome image. You have captured the textures and tones. The roots lead me into the scene. Very nicely done.   Posted: 01/14/2025 00:26:26

Hi Ruth. Just visiting your group out of curiosity, and was immediately drawn to your image. This is amazing, and your post-processing has definitely emphasized the unique root system of these trees. I also love the scattering of the leaves among the root system. I've been to Kauai many times and never experience these trees. THANK YOU! Ingrid (Group 14,80)   Posted: 01/16/2025 02:34:20

Ingrid, I'm so glad you visited our group. Thanks for your comments. The Moreton Bay fig trees are not nature to Kauai, but were imported for use in the Allerton Gardens. The Allerton Gardens have amazing plants that are worth a visit.   Posted: 01/19/2025 18:28:04

Hi Ruth,
Wow! You have keen eyes for details, and you are good at noticing small but important things that other people might not notice.
In this image, your post processing has turned a normal photo into an artwork. The angle of your shot emphasized the winding roots and the conversion in B&W are well done! I especially like some fallen leaves between those roots. Excellent image!   Posted: 01/17/2025 04:21:39

Thanks for your comments, Kieu-Hanh. It's interesting that I didn't notice the leaves on the ground until the image was converted to b&w.   Posted: 01/20/2025 22:47:08

What a great photo you have created. It is perfect in monochrome. In particular your processing has brought out the trees in the foreground replacing what was distracting light. Beautiful.   Posted: 01/19/2025 21:26:38
