About the Image(s)

I took this the same evening as the sandhill crane photo I submitted last month. We stayed to watch the sunset and then turned to see the moon! I had my long lens on so it was difficult to capture the entire scene, thus the vertical. I edited in camera raw only. Settings were ISO 100; 150mm, f/5.6, 1/125. I was using the Nikon Z9 with the tamron 150-600 and adapter for the Z camera. I look forward to your thoughts.

Hi Mary Ann. You did a very nice job in getting the moon with perfect exposure and sharpness. The clouds in the sky give some nice added drama to the scene. Overall, however IMO, the scene is too dark which renders the foreground indistinct for my liking. You might consider a gradient on the lower half of the frame to raise the shadows..and perhaps create a faux moon reflection on the water.   Posted: 01/06/2025 16:41:34

Michael, thank you for your comments and suggestions. I have been playing with the moon reflection in the water but not sure this looks realistic. I have two versions!   Posted: 01/13/2025 20:01:21

I don't think either of these really work for the moon reflection...any advice on that is appreciated!   Posted: 01/14/2025 00:39:36

Mary Ann, I like the sharp moon and tinted clouds in you photo. The layers of clouds add to the peacefulness of the scene. I agree with Michael, that I would prefer that the bottom land portion of the image be lighter to should more detail. You could keep the moon as a the focal point, while allowing more color and detail of the land to show.   Posted: 01/11/2025 15:48:57

Ruth, thank you for your comments and suggestions. I have been attempting to add the moon reflection as suggested by Michael but not sure about it!   Posted: 01/13/2025 20:03:01

Mary Anne, Having read the other's comments, I tend to agree. I see that you did lighting the entire image from the original. The use of a graduated mask is a good one and not often thought of, so Michael once again has some good thoughts. That's about the only way to get a nice gradual change in lighting.
Your moon is well exposed, showing the craters. That is probably why the overall photo was so dark. It is. a very moody phot, and well worth taking..   Posted: 01/11/2025 20:31:50

Thank you, Joan. I have been playing around with it trying to incorporate the suggestions, including a moon reflection. I have never attempted that!   Posted: 01/13/2025 20:04:16

Wonderful capture of a bright full mooon. I understand the others' comments about the dark foreground but am not bothered much by it.   Posted: 01/19/2025 21:33:08

Hi Mary Ann,
You have captured the moon with good results. The moon is quite sharp, and it also includes craters on the surface.
The foreground is a bit dark, and I think that It's quite a challenge to balance the exposure between the moon and the foreground. I'd prefer to see a high tree or a building on the State Island road for a more visible foreground.
Since you stayed there to watch the sunset, I wonder whether you had any shots during the blue hour when the sky has a richer color?   Posted: 01/21/2025 14:53:39
