Two Roses - Two lives by Vincent Cochain, EPSA

July 2024 - Two Roses - Two lives

About the Image(s)

Still taken in our (street) garden. I liked the two stage of life of these 2 roses, the drops of water (picture taken at 7:00 AM in June) and the light.

1/400, f/8,0 ISO 320 with 105 mm Macro (FF).
Process in LR: increased the exposure (+ 1), texture and clarity. Decreased highlight and shadow. A mask with the background to decrease the light.

Very nice Vincent. I like the exposure of the background and IMO it adds to the subject definition because of the cool vs warm contrast.   Posted: 07/05/2024 20:36:30

Hi Vincent: Of course just my humble opinion; think your overall lighting is a little on the harsh side. If I had to guess I would say your rose picture was photographed in bright open sun which will give you uneven lighting. The use of a diffusion screen would soften the sun lighting on the rose. You can make your own out of cheese cloth and an embroidery hoop, or purchase ready made ones. I use reflectors and diffusers manufactured by the Photo-flex company. You can go on the company website and you will find a lot of sizes to choose from. I find the 12" round and also the 22" round sizes work the best.   Posted: 07/06/2024 05:11:58

Thanks Murphy for your comments and suggestion. Of course a diffusion screen would have improved the lightening.   Posted: 07/24/2024 18:54:48

There is a shadow of the large flower on the rosebud. It seems that there are some highlights on the flower on the left. The background is fine.   Posted: 07/08/2024 16:26:06

Your are right. Indeed the shadow on the bulb is disturbing.   Posted: 07/24/2024 18:55:32

Vincent, the background is great as is the story, but I agree with Murphy that the composition suffers from the shadoe on the bud and the highlights on the full flower. Ray   Posted: 07/18/2024 00:28:44
