Dicentra spectabillis white var. by Dan McKenna

July 2024 - Dicentra spectabillis white var.

About the Image(s)

Sony A7rv, Sony 90mm f2.8 at f10, ISO 1250, 1/160 sec.
Two image panorama focus stacked. Assembled in Helicon and PTGui Pro. I can bring the subject closer to the lens by doing a pano and in this case it was just a 2 panel pano shot in portrait orientation. Although the red and white bleeding hearts are more popular the white variety is pleasing as well IMO.

Hi Dan: Your technical quality is simply perfect on the white bleeding hearts. White is probably the most difficult flower color to photograph as it is so easy to burn out the white so you have no detail on the petals. The white flowers show good detail and texture. I like the soft subtle mood you have created, then your composition leading from the lower left up through the frame to the upper right is ideal.
Good background with just enough habitat showing to give some depth.
If I had a suggestion it would be to add a thin white border, it would separate your black background from the black website page.   Posted: 07/06/2024 05:28:24

Good composition. No highlights on the white flowers. Good background.   Posted: 07/08/2024 16:30:48

Dan, I really like the image - the only reaction I had was about the spacing between the first lower left flower and the rest. What might you get if you crop that out or clone it out and do a closer crop? Ray   Posted: 07/18/2024 01:07:56

thanks for doing that - and now just not sure what looks best. Am not asking for more really but what about cloning out the non attached leaves?   Posted: 07/21/2024 21:19:18

No then the stalk looses context in relation to the dark background. IMO it would be floating   Posted: 07/21/2024 22:15:26

Dan: I like the way Mother Nature designed it to begin with.
Composition wise I am not a fan of square format simply not very artistic in my humble opinion; however on certain subjects it works well.

I like all of the leaves as nature provided, do not want to sound like a nit-pic, but I would darken down that bright stem at the left side of the frame. Good flower photography.

I also prefer the new version.
I also agree with the (thin) white border.
For the background, the opinions are divided. I think (just my opinion) it is too present as it can give the impression not to be finished (completely dark).
I like the composition (squarre format and diagonal).   Posted: 07/24/2024 19:07:30
