August 2026 - Out of the Dark

About the Image(s)

This photograph tells the story of a water lily rising brightly out of dark waters. It feels like a promise that even from the darkest moments, one can emerge into the light. Using natural contrast and deep shadows, I wanted to showcase this beauty emerging from the darkness like a jewel. I further enhanced the composition by leaving negative space in the direction the flower faces.

I enjoy the use of light to showcase this bloom. The light on the flower is quite harsh and maybe a diffuser could have reduced that but your choice!   Posted: 08/03/2026 14:39:42

Hi Sevinc: I like your composition with the half circle lily pads floating on the water at the top of the frame, and also the placement of the water lily flower facing into the picture area.

I concur with Susan regarding the quite harsh lighting on the pink flower, the use of a lighting diffuser would soften the lighting on the flower.   Posted: 08/04/2026 02:31:21

The light on the flower is quite harsh as Susan and Murphy have pointed out. Nevertheless, it provides a good contrast with the surrounding and has good sharpness.   Posted: 08/06/2026 16:24:57

I like how you are using your lighting to bring out the flower while keeping the background significantly darker. To me that greatly accentuates the flower and makes it stand out. the shadows on the flower work for me in providing depth and texture to the flower.

I do agree with the others in that I think the lighting on the flower would work better if it was a bit softer.   Posted: 08/12/2026 16:46:37

The aim of the maker is the most important in a picture. If we don't know it of can find it, we have our own interpretation. However we have always our own interpretation.
In this case, there is a great and important message, well showed with a picture.
Technically I agree with the other comments.   Posted: 08/21/2026 10:12:37

I like it. The flower could be toned down a bit, but the rest is great.   Posted: 08/22/2026 00:28:42
