The Transformation of Sonchus by Sevinc Koyuncu Albayrak

July 2026 - The Transformation of Sonchus

About the Image(s)

Nikon D90, 18-105 mm (with an extension tube, exact mm forgotten), f/5.6, 1/1000s,
ISO 200.
This macro study captures the life cycle of a Common Sow Thistle (Sonchus).
By framing the tightly closed green buds right alongside the delicate, fluffy white seedhead, I wanted to freeze a single, poetic moment of nature's transition. A clean, dark background was used to isolate the subject, ensuring that the intricate textures of this botanical journey remain the sole focus of the image.

Hi Servinc: Welcome to flower and plant group #75.

I like your overall composition with the fluffy white seed head and two flower buds against a dark background.

With this type of a descriptive picture the two flower buds also need to be in sharp focus. You would need to use a smaller F stop like f/16 to bring those two flower buds into sharp focus.

In the upper right corner there are two light areas that distract from your flower group, I would tone those areas so they were not so prominent.   Posted: 07/02/2026 06:50:11

Sevinc,

Welcome again! Glad to see your unique image. Catching all those little hairs in focus can be difficult. The buds on the right are soft, which may have been your intent, but I would love to see their details too and perhaps clone the background bright elements on the right to solid background color. But great monthly entry.   Posted: 07/02/2026 17:05:33

Welcome to the group Sevinc!
Your intent is to show the life cycle of the flower. A smaller aperture would have sharpened the buds. There are distractions at the top right of the image. These distractions could have been removed by cloning or other means.   Posted: 07/07/2026 13:48:27

Love the composition and the plant. Lots of detail and I'm OK with the softer bud. The white fuzzy is the main subject. Great job and looking forward to seeing more of your photos.   Posted: 07/07/2026 16:52:21
