Reaching for the Light by Susan Bailey

April 2026 - Reaching for the Light

About the Image(s)

Photographed with my Olympus EM1 MkII and 90mm macro lens at 1/640 and f/4.5. I used a fast shutter speed as I was basically on the ground! We have an abundance of tulip patches and I wanted to show how they reach for the light. The shapes and colors of tulips make them one of my favorite spring subjects.

I like the composition. Giving more stem and less bud does give it that feel you intended. Racing to the top. Tulips are one of my favorites as well. Although they disappoint me all the time when I try to freeze them to photograph lol. Great shot.   Posted: 04/06/2026 23:27:06

Thanks Mo.. I've never tried to freeze them, so you are ahead of me with imagination!   Posted: 04/07/2026 00:13:35

I think that using a smaller aperture would have given more sharpness to the flowers. And a slight increase in contrast and sharpening improves the overall image.   Posted: 04/07/2026 15:46:14

Thank you Gaetan... I was going for the soft look but it would be nice as you suggested too.   Posted: 04/07/2026 16:11:50

Hi Susan: The f stop of 4.5 has provided you with a really nice selective focus flower picture. Most of the picture is an out of focus blending of colors. I really like your composition where you have a group of orange tulips in the middle of the frame and then the large orange flower in the upper right corner to tie your composition together. Really good seeing to see this possibility and make it work well as you have done. Good Work --- KUDOS   Posted: 04/09/2026 02:54:09

Thank you Murphy. It was worth the effort of crawling around the tulips!   Posted: 04/09/2026 10:27:29

Original composition to lead the eyes. We take time to see and "read" the picture. Well done.
I like the colors of the tulips, and the green of the stems which divides the picture in 2 zones.
A petal sharper will have given another picture, but it is your choice. Thanks again for the originality.   Posted: 04/14/2026 07:45:54
