Last time, I submitted a photo of a tree with the sun setting behind it, taken on the North Carolina coast. Here is a different tree image taken while on a photo trip with 7 other photographers to Yellowstone National Park in mid February. Photo taken using a Nikon Z8 with a 28-400mm lens at 28mm, 1/800 sec at f/5.6, - 0.33 EV, iso 64, handheld. I did a small crop in Lightroom, ran it through NIK Silver Efex to make a more minimalist B&W version.
Winter in Yellowstone offers numerous opportunities not only for wildlife (e.g., bison, coyotes, wolves, big-horn sheep), but also for stark landscapes. I post an album with explanatory text for family and friends if anyone is interested but I must admit I have a tendency to post lots of photos.

Hi Ray: Excellent scenery type image with a lot of coolness of mood in a stark landscape. Your choice of the panoramic format was a very good choice for the tree grouping; then I like your compositional arrangement with the main grouping of the dead snags biased to the right side of the frame.
Technical qualities are spot on; all in all an excellent landscape image. cheers.   Posted: 03/08/2025 10:21:50

I did not read your reply first and reading it now our themes are pretty similar lol   Posted: 03/11/2025 21:26:30

Hi again Ray: I really liked your original, a really extra good scenery picture.
The second "white out" type version is more creative, has tremendous mood and impact. In a larger size print and mounted correctly I think this would sell in a high end art gallery as it is a different type of snow scene than we usually see. KUDOS on your creativity in creating this second version, a very contemporary monochrome image.   Posted: 03/15/2025 23:30:50

Thanks Murphy - that was what I was hoping to achieve. At least i did not need to add a white frame with this one. Ray   Posted: 03/16/2025 15:55:04

Firstly lovely shot. Like the clouds and the whip up. Like the content weighting on the right and the hint of sun on the left. Feels cold just looking at the pic. I have lens envy. That 28-400 Z mount is on my wish list. It has the best write ups. Just got the 2x teleconverter. I like how you have cropped this narrow wide, suits the comp.Nice   Posted: 03/11/2025 21:25:14

I like the original with the sky and definitions in the clouds and snow whipping. The Mono is very nice evolution of the photo.

Both images are great. The orignal is a very beautiful landscape, and the B&W is a very beautiful "minimalist" one.
Good contrast. Nothing is burnt, which can be difficult with all this white. The snow in the wind is maybe less natural in the B&W version.   Posted: 03/23/2025 10:41:34

Late to the party. Love the minimalist version, but like the original better. Great job, Ray.   Posted: 03/24/2025 19:25:46
