About the Image(s)

With perhaps too much time on my hands, I decided this month to do some experimenting. While I
don’t like the strange colors in some IR images, I broke the bonds of this bias to explore fantasy colors.
This is an image of a sailboat race on a lake near where I live. To render this unnatural, but hopefully
interesting image, I did the usual color channel switching but then using the selection tool, I adjusted the
colors in several areas of the image (e.g. making the water color like that of lakes in British Columbia). I
spent a lot of time on this image, I’m not completely happy with the result, but the process was
instructive. What do you think? Camera data: Nikon D7000 (590nm), f/9, 1/1250, 750mm, ISO=400.

Hi Charles,

I would have enjoyed your comments about why you chose color IR and the range of colors/tones you selected. You did a nice job of straightening the horizon line and cropping out the foreground water, in my view. I simply don't relate to the color palette...which is my problem, not yours! I have one camera converted to color IR and have constantly struggled to create something with it that I like.   Posted: 09/01/2023 07:52:32

Gary, I alerted Melanie to the absence of the "About" piece. She didn't include it although I sent it to her. She's busy; certainly an oversight. In it you'll see my confession that I too don't like the strange colors, but like sin, had to try it once.   Posted: 09/01/2023 08:55:59

I also like to play with false IR colors, and I can appreciate what you've done here. It's intended to be a fantasy, not reality. I wonder why the tree tops on the left are blue, but everything else is more purple. The 590nm filter surely give a wider range of colors than my 720nm.

Arik, the blue cast to the trees left of center was, honestly, not fully intended, but I went with it.   Posted: 09/03/2023 21:17:36

While I identify with Gary's comments, Charles, I'm intrigued by the composition. Just the two boats is a bit of a rule breaker but it adds a little edge and I think it works.   Posted: 09/03/2023 06:47:47

For once, being late to commenting worked out for me as I see the about description. I have to say that it's not my taste in color, but I still find the image appealing to me. The composition is excellent. I pulled it into Photoshop, pulled up Hue/Saturation and played with the sliders a bit and found some different color combinations that worked for me but not necessarily for anyone else. Art is a subjective thing and you are doing art here.   Posted: 09/03/2023 15:18:23

Yes Henry, this is image to goof around with, and why not?   Posted: 09/03/2023 21:18:20

Hi Chuck, Your crop works very well, and it's great to be able to see the sailors so clearly. It seems that even though you spent a lot of time on this, you had fun. It takes a little time to appreciate the colors, but I'm able to accept this fantasy world you have presented.   Posted: 09/04/2023 09:18:16

Melanie, I had fun, but will return to more "normal" stuff next month, but with more insight on the use of color.   Posted: 09/10/2023 17:57:55

Hi Charles
I'm double minded about this picture! Although you've chosen the color version, I wondered if you tried converting it into B&W! However, your attempt in presenting it in color is to be admired.   Posted: 09/05/2023 00:57:22

Charles,

If you are going to push the processing boundaries and display the results this is the right forum to do so.

The colors are amazing, beyond my creative threshold to achieve, bit I like what you did.

Regards

Thanks Emil for accepting the colors, and more so, the goofing around I did to learn more about using color in IR   Posted: 09/10/2023 17:54:25
