About the Image(s)

After five cancellations of my street photography workshop, due to Covid or bad weather, we finally had a beautiful day to roam the Princeton University campus and the streets of Princeton, NJ. I used my Canon Powershot G10 point and shoot camera that was converted with a 720nm filter. My settings were 1/100 sec., F5.6, ISO 100, and -0.33 EV.

Post processing included global and local tonal adjustments and cropping in ACR, followed by Topaz AI tools to reduce noise and sharpen the picture. The B&W conversion was done in NIK Silver Efex Pro.

Hi Arik,

You could have titled this "Just Friends" as one example. I note she has her hand on or near his knee, signifying that friendship. Very powerful and strong composition. I am struggling with the bulk of the tree, but I don't know why. It took your vision to 'see' this one!   Posted: 09/01/2023 07:42:48

Thank you, Gary. She's padding the dog that is mostly hidden behind the man.   Posted: 09/02/2023 13:11:19

I just love simple images like this, Arik, and am reminded that so much of photography is about what we keep out of images, as much as what we include.

The texture and the lines in the tree and building are what draw me, and of course the light on the leaves, the people are just an accent, very nice!

You nailed the composition on this, Arik. I love the framing and contrast between the organic tree and the sculpted columns. Processing is excellent. I like the different tonal "zones" as I move through the frame (dark tree trunk, less dark steps, lighter building, white foliage). My only suggestion is to print it!   Posted: 09/03/2023 14:50:12

Hi Arik. I'm jealous that you have a group going out to do street photography. Although living in Florida, I seldom go out to photograph in the summer.
Your expertise really shows here, as most would not even have thought about including the tree, which makes a perfect frame. Well seen and well processed.   Posted: 09/04/2023 09:07:30

Thank you. Living between NYC and Philly allows me to visit large cities and small towns in the country. We had a week with temperatures around 80 degrees. It was a pleasant day for the workshop. This week is back to 90-97 degrees.

Hi Arik
Street photography is not always easy. Having said that you've done a terrific job in terms of post-processing and framing. Like it very much!   Posted: 09/05/2023 00:33:55

Arik,

I like your choice of camera angle here very much. The dark trunk contrasted by the white foliage on the branch adds nature to the man made Princeton building and the couple enjoying themselves on the steps. This to me makes for a great street walk.

Well done

Arik, yes, as others have said, using the tree to frame in the image is masterful. But what I appreciate most is how you caught the couple in interaction. They are looking at each other and she is offering an outstretched hand to him. Who needs a course in street photography when you have your instincts.   Posted: 09/08/2023 15:22:02
