About the Image(s)

I thought I would play around and do something really out of my comfort zone…an abstract. This image of a group of ferns was taken at the Louis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond. I wanted to highlight a single fern with the others acting as a backdrop. It is a 720nm image so I could basically do whatever I wanted with the colors. The hardest part was masking to get a single fern as the subject. I used various masks but mainly object and luminosity with various adding and subtracting to finally isolate the one fern. I wasn’t sure what colors I wanted when I started but I ended up with this selection which I thought gave it a mystical look. The image parameters are:

Hi Jeff. Creative idea and a good execution. Nice work with the masking and the choice of colors for the final image. There's a little pink in the top left area that can be easily painted in blue.   Posted: 10/01/2026 14:21:45

Jeff, welcome to our IR discussion group. If your first entry forecasts what's coming, I can't wait until November. Your use of masks is masterful. For me, words like delicate, graceful, and subtle describe the composition. I can imagine other color combinations, but this one works wonders.   Posted: 10/01/2026 14:29:13

I love what you created here. Top marks to you as one of our previous members would like to say in his comments.

You picked a complex image to try to mask off an individual and you achieved that. It shows patience and determination

We are the right group to share IR rendering experimentation.

regards

What a great idea! You picked a really difficult subject to mask with not much contrast to distinguish the one leaf from the others. I see some masking errors on close examination, but at first glance, it looks good.   Posted: 10/02/2026 18:38:10

Hi Jeff, Well done! You have manage to extract a compelling version from a busy image with no real center of interest. Well seen and clever processing.   Posted: 10/04/2026 17:50:04
