About the Image(s)

We were in Portland in September for the PSA conference. We only signed up for one of the outings this time around: the Portland Japanese Garden, a place we've enjoyed several times previously. I shot with both my conventional and IR cameras, but was happier with my IR work. This was a particular favorite.
Sony A7R IV (full spectrum conversion with 720nm Kolari Vision clip filter), Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM 2 lens. ISO 160, 28mm, f/11, 1/30 second. Shot handheld.
BW conversion done in Lightroom Classic. Cropping, straghtening, and basic exposure adjustments done in LrC. Final tweaks done in Photoshop with On1 Effects as a plugin. Used Dynamic Contrast, and Big Softy vignette in On1.

Hi Henry. I like the play of light and shadows in this picture. The processed image has a wonderful tonal range that makes it pop. Nicely done.   Posted: 12/02/2025 15:20:46

Thanks, Arik. That's what drew me to the scene.   Posted: 12/08/2025 19:06:46

Henry, I have a mixed reaction to this image. The tonality and lighting is splendid, and the composition is intriguing, but my eye has a little trouble integrating the stone figure. It is interesting on its own, but . . ., can't put my finger on it.   Posted: 12/02/2025 15:44:55

Thanks for your thoughts, Charles. I have my own feelings of ambivalence about it as well and can't really express why either.   Posted: 12/08/2025 19:09:06

Hi Henry, I like the dappled light without being blown out. The 2 trees in the background provide a natural frame for the bogota. I am loving your strong vignette.   Posted: 12/02/2025 21:36:14

This reminds me of Arik's image, Henry, where I said it needed a subject of some sort. Well, here we have one, but like Charles, I'm having trouble integrating it. Regardless, it's a beautiful setting, I really like the round stones leading me into the scene.   Posted: 12/08/2025 23:56:40

Hi Henry, I love the stones and I love the trees. The light makes it all pop. But like others I find that there is something that is not working. My thought is to crop it down a little to make the structure more prominent and also to lighten the structure so that the tone is different from the trees. I know this is personal taste!   Posted: 12/12/2025 15:54:31
