About the Image(s)

This image is from my recent works-on with NPAN in the Bisti Wilderness area in New Mexico. I actually enjoy my IR images more than my night images. This was taken at Shiprock. The slope of the horizon is going down from left to right. Minimal processing, using masking to enhance the details on Shiprock. Coincidentally, we were treated to the aurora that night, my first ever!

Wonderful image. The detail and light on Shiprock, the sky, and the muted foreground bowing to your subject's majesty are spot on.

Steve, we are so lucky to have such interesting geography in the western part of the country. Like the face of an old man, these rock features tell stories, stories about origins of the earth that go back in time, so far it is impossible to comprehend. With this image you have documented this story telling. I like the wispy sky and how it contrasts with textures in Shiprock. I can't add much except to suggest maybe working on the highlights in the Shiprock to render more dynamic contrasts.   Posted: 12/02/2025 15:32:22

Hi Steve. Beautiful composition with the rock formation off center and the grasses in the foreground leading you in. The image is mostly low key, creating a nice mood. I would remove the sharper contrail coming from the left border. Nice work.   Posted: 12/02/2025 15:36:43

Thanks Arik, that's a good suggestion.   Posted: 12/02/2025 21:40:56

As a Tony Hillerman fan, I had long wanted to see this landmark for myself and finally had the opportunity last spring. I have to say that light, time of day, and atmospheric haze all conspired against me getting a worthwhile image.
This is wonderful - great sky, good detail, great shadows. I have no suggestions other than that you should print it.   Posted: 12/08/2025 19:16:41

Coming from Emil's Image to this one is striking, such strong contrast here! Both ends of the spectrum.
I once traveled there to shoot, after seeing images of Shiprock. It's a magical place and you've captured it quite well, so strikingly sharp, nice light, really no suggestions for improvement.   Posted: 12/09/2025 00:00:51

Hi Steve, Everyone has already said it. How lucky you were to be at such a great and beautiful place. You have done it justice!   Posted: 12/12/2025 16:00:28
