About the Image(s)

My wife and I drove down to Portland OR this last week to attend the PSA Photo Festival. One of the things we've been wanting to do down that way is to visit this historic mill east of Woodland WA. It was a bit early for fall color but the scene certainly lent itself to IR. This is the classic view of the mill taken from an adjacent covered bridge. I
processed this in Lightroom Classic using the B&W Blue Filter v.2 and a series of exposure adjustments. I also cropped and straightened the image. Further processing was done in Photoshop and On1 Effects.
Sony A7R IV (full spectrum conversion with 720nm clip filter), Sony 24-70 f/2.8 GM2 lens. ISO 125, 24mm f/10, 1/30 second. Shot handheld

Henry, I can see why you went of your way to photograph this grist mill. Often a color photo is taken, but this IR version is gorgeous. A very strong composition, an award winner for sure.   Posted: 10/01/2025 16:27:03

Thanks, Charles. I did do a number of conventional color images as well, but you are right about the harsh light. IR really came through here.   Posted: 10/01/2025 21:49:04

Henry, another a great image. I love the composition. My only suggestion is to try adding a bit of contrast to the mill to balance the the darker tree trunks on the right.   Posted: 10/01/2025 19:28:50

Hi Henry. Very nice recovery of the shadows. The final picture looks good. The scene and your composition are beautiful. Nicely done. I don't think that a standard camera would've done as good a job with the harsh light as the IR did.   Posted: 10/01/2025 21:27:07

Thank you, Arik. I agree about a standard camera vs. IR here.   Posted: 10/01/2025 21:50:31

Hi Henry,
Well seen and captured. IR made the day with the harsh light. I might darken the whole image ever so slightly to downplay the highlights just slightly.   Posted: 10/02/2025 13:07:53

A timeless image. IR or not.

I made a call tweek. I darkened the mill just a bit by using the LR landscape mask, selected architecture, and reduced the highlights just a bit. The initial mask picked up a few other objects that I erased

This reminds me a little of Charles' image this month, Henry, as the subject barn is distinctly off to the side. Here, I'm getting a little bit of the ping pong effect; am I looking down the creek, or over to the barn? It adds a little bit of tension to the image, for me. This image has some beautiful foliage, with well preserved tonalities, especially the foreground vines.   Posted: 10/03/2025 22:43:04

Hi Henry, Iconic image, and worth the trip. Either way the foliage is beautiful. You really did well to recover all the detail in the mill. I do think adding contrast to the mill would make this "pop" even more.   Posted: 10/05/2025 16:26:48
