About the Image(s)

It was hot, hazy and humid on the day I visited the Great Wall of China. Not good light for IR photography. However, inside a tower I discovered this child fixed on her iPhone sweating but oblivious to the heat. For puzzling reasons, people in the collectivistic socialistic culture of China are even more obsessed with their smart phones than those in the West. I liked how the light singled out the child and
how IR made her appear as a marbled figurine. To render the final image, I cropped it moving the subject to the lower-left quarter, added space below her shoes, highlighted her image to contrast it against the barren walls and curiously ugly graffiti inside the tower, then finally, reduced noise with Topas AI. Camera stats: 1/250, 18mm, f/3.5, ISO=320.

Hi Charles. What a wonderful capture of the girl. The square format is perfect. I also like the back light and the overall fine tuning of the tones. The technical handling is very good, but I find the content to be even stronger. The young girl is sitting in an old structure, using a modern phone for entertainment. The contrast in both contents and B&W tones match nicely.   Posted: 08/01/2025 00:44:16

Charles,

This is an image you must photograph and happily you dd just that.

I echo Arik's comments regarding modern vs old. Sadly she is more focused on her iPhone than you but that is the social climate now.

Top marks

Regards
