About the Image(s)

This one is all about those beautiful clouds, of course, and it presents lots of challenges for editing. I’ve brought back the whites in the foliage some, but how far to go? And how much to punch up the sky? Then there’s the lower right corner rock, which you will probably say needs cloning out. I look forward to your thoughts.

Hi Jack,

Wow! This is a GREAT scene...classic composition and excellent inclusion of the elements (well, we can do without the rock!). You have given yourself and us a real challenge with post-processing. Am I remembering that you don't have Nik Color Efex or Silver Efex in your digital toolkit? If not, I highly recommend you add them both if you want to advance your skills with infrared, and color for that matter. My version doesn't look a great deal different than yours, but the Levels and Curves have all been adjusted, plus some spot lightening and darkening. Ansel Adams would have loved to have had a large, 4x5 negative, of this scene so he could do his magic in the chemical darkroom!   Posted: 01/02/2025 12:11:50

Nice job on the edit, Gary. The toning is more even, and good cloning on the bottom right! I used to use Silver Fx extensively way back as an Aperture plug-in for converting color black and whites. I see less use for it in infrared, but for an image like this maybe its worth giving it a try again.   Posted: 01/05/2025 23:51:27

Jack,
I'm with Gary about the quality of this composition. Just a great place to be with an IR camera. The challenge to play with this was too tempting to resist, but I went a different way, processing-wise. I cropping in quite a bit to minimize some of the problematic elements and played around with luminosity masks to isolate different tones.   Posted: 01/03/2025 00:07:37

Interesting take on this, Henry. Yours is more of a "morning", with the high key. Nice even tones, but the sky is a little too bright for me. Thanks for taking the time.   Posted: 01/05/2025 23:53:14

Jack, I can see what attracted you to this scene. The clouds are mystical. The bottom quarter of the image is a challenge. How would you feel about cropping it out?   Posted: 01/05/2025 00:22:37

Thanks, Charles. I can't really crop from the bottom, without losing the tree reflection. From the side, perhaps a little, but I like the cloning that Gary did, as a solution.   Posted: 01/05/2025 23:54:12

Amazing scene and picture. Beautifully handled. I have no suggestions. I like it very much.   Posted: 01/05/2025 21:21:32

Hi Jack, I can see what attracted you to this perfect scene. It has all the right elements. Both Gary and Henry have presented worthy edits, but I do like the softness you your own. Maybe getting some tone variations in the trees is all that is needed   Posted: 01/06/2025 15:17:44

Jack,

My eye says to open up the foliage on either side of the water feature to lead you in. I then used a square crop on your image

Thoughts?

Thank you Emil, yes, this is what I am after, too, I think your edit works very well, and I appreciate you taking the time.   Posted: 01/18/2025 17:14:19
