About the Image(s)

In early June of 2021 there was a powerful volcanic eruption in Iceland. Within days hundreds of tourists traveled there to behold nature’s might, temporarily putting aside their fear of COVID. This is an IR image of one such tourist. To render the final image, in PS I heightened the shadows, increased clarity, increased contrast in the ash laden ski, added a warming filter and reduced noise with Topaz.
Camera data: Nikon D7000 (590nm), f/11, 1/400, 24mm, ISO=400.

Having the person there makes so much of a difference in this, Charles. I can feel the wind blowing, (from her hair) and the desolation of the place. I'm not sure the tonalities of the image lend themselves all that well to infrared, but it still works, its nicely laid out.   Posted: 01/01/2025 23:26:02

Charles,
Great image. The tourist is well-placed and draws our eye to the central subject. I did find it a bit dark for my taste and I think you could do without as much sky. I did a quick curves adjustment and cropped it in from the top and sides.   Posted: 01/03/2025 00:14:48

Henry, dark indeed it was and is. Volcanic eruptions are not always the fire & brimstone things often depicted. I like your crop and lightening. Thank you.   Posted: 01/04/2025 16:57:25

Charles,

Excellent composition and subject, but I'm just not sure what IR does to enhance the scene. We normally think of volcanic eruption to be so dramatic in color, and I'm not finding that drama in this version.   Posted: 01/03/2025 00:44:53

Interesting scene and picture. While the scene doesn't have the typical foliage for IR, I believe that the woman stands out because of it. Nicely done.   Posted: 01/05/2025 21:23:58

Hi Chuck, While having foliage in our images marks them as infrared, I don't believe that it is always necessary. The rendition of the person is very well done and completes the story. I would crop out some of the sky and lighten the tones a little.   Posted: 01/06/2025 15:22:43
