About the Image(s)

The Princeton University Chapel is a Collegiate Gothic chapel located on the university's main campus in Princeton, NJ. I visit the campus every couple of months to take pictures of the architecture and walk the dog. I went for a different view of the chapel, using the tree to frame it and take advantage of the IR. This picture didn’t require much post processing. I made tonal adjustments in ACR and later, during the B&W conversion, in Nik Silver Efex Pro. Noise reduction and sharpening were done in Topaz DeNoise AI.

Taken with the Nikon D300, set to ISO 200, 1/160 sec, f10, EV +0.33.

I love the crisp sharpness of your infrareds, Arik, and this one is no exception. Nice light, nicely laid out. The right side of the image gives me pause a little bit, partly due to the black background of the web page, the image loses its frame. Looking at the original gives some reference. I love the black sky, but darkening the trees as well, just kind of makes the whole right side of the image fall off. Keeping the tonality in and around the trees, that you had in the original, works better for me.   Posted: 01/01/2025 23:23:37

I echo Jack's comments, Arik. I love the composition and the tree and building are excellent. I'd like to see you open up shadows in both the bottom part of the building and the trees in the lower right. That would also minimize the haloing effect above the treeline to the right of the chapel.   Posted: 01/02/2025 23:37:53

Hi Arik,
It's classic post-processing and effective composition...I wouldn't expect anyting less from you. I just find the tree frame, with the bright whiteness of the foliage due to IR, to be overwhelming for the size and scale of the chapel.   Posted: 01/03/2025 00:42:10

Arik, I very much like the way you created a lot of contrast between the sky and the chapel. Although the tree in the foreground could compete with the chapel, it does not; rather, it frames in the chapel and establishes a leading line to it. Nice work professor.   Posted: 01/05/2025 00:17:21

Hi Arik, I keep thinking that you must have had a reason for the very somber rendition. Your composition is great. I like the balance of the large foreground tree with the small tree in front of the building. I believe that finding detail in base of the building and in the tree will enhance your lovely image.   Posted: 01/06/2025 15:06:55

Arik

Such a wonderful crisp image!!

My thoughts is lift the foliage in the lower right of your frame just a bit to balance the brights on the left.
