My wife and I recently attended a fall workshop in the Eastern Sierra
region of California. While we were there primarily for the color, my IR
camera was usually close at hand. One of stops along the way was this
area in the White Mountains above Bishop. We were particularly taken by
these wave clouds, technically called Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds but also
known as California Wave clouds as they are more common in this area.
The clouds, along with the aspens lining this road struck me as a
compelling shot.
Sony A7R IV full-spectrum conversion with a 720nm clip-in filter. Sony
24-70 f/2.8 GM2 lens. ISO 100, 24mm, f/13, f/30 second. Tripod was used.
Processing done in Lightroom Classic. Some geometric correction,
cropping, exposure adjusting. Did some cleanup in Photoshop along with
some dodging and burning.

I'm a big fan of images like this, Henry. The road is a natural leading line, and the clouds form a line which plays off that. I like that you went with the black sky.
I've traveled highway 395 many times, and taken this side road up the mountains just once or twice.   Posted: 11/04/2024 01:53:59

Hi Henry. Very nicely seen and captured scene. It was parfect for IR, even if the picture didn't capture the bright fall colors. Excellent handling and a nice composition.   Posted: 11/04/2024 18:05:03

Very nice IR work.
The tree-lined leading line roadway, the Sea Wave clouds against dark sky above the mountains all work nicely together.
I don't feel AI could compete with your image

Thanks, Emil. I certainly couldn't have imagined an AI scene like this. Real world serendipity rules!   Posted: 11/09/2024 00:59:11

Wow Henry! Take those clouds and bottle them for future use. You have all the perfect ingredients for a great image. There are so many diagonal lines leading us through the entire image. Your position highlights the parallel of the clouds to the distant mountains. And then there is the wonderfully rendered IR tree line. I think you can guess that I love this picture.   Posted: 11/10/2024 18:42:24
