About the Image(s)

This is one of my attempts to take a different kind of lotus picture. I have a lot of portraits of lotus flowers in different kinds of light, so I was looking for something different. I took this overhead photo with an iPhone 12 because the only lens I had with me was a telephoto, which is necessary because the lotus ponds are very large at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, DC. I took several different compositions but settled on this one because it reminded me of the shape and position of the sun in a drawing I probably made when I was very young.

I like this composition showing only a quarter of the lotus blossom. It leaves the imagination to fill in the rest of the flower. The colors works nicely together, too. If I were to make any suggestions, it would be to darken and saturate the upper right quadrant to be more similar to the lower part of the image. The bright white pulls my attention from the flower.   Posted: 10/02/2026 13:03:48

This is a very interesting point of view on the lotus. It's realistic but also a little abstract in my mind due to the way it's composed. I agree with David that the upper right quadrant draws the eye since it's so bright. But I do like that it's a different hue than the section below it. Maybe saturating or darkening just a bit but I like how the different sections add a graphic feel to your image.   Posted: 10/05/2026 12:49:49
