About the Image(s)

For this month’s image, I chose this photograph of a red poppy that I took in my garden two weeks ago. The image is an in-camera stack of ten focus-bracketing images, which allowed me to capture as much detail as possible in the flower.

EXIF data:

Shutter speed: 1/500 sec

Aperture: f/5.6

ISO: 1600

Camera: Canon R6 Mark II

Lens: Canon 100mm Macro

What an exquisite capture of a red poppy! Your focus stacking brought out all the fine details in the thorny stem, red petals and yellow stamen. I can also appreciate your cloning out the bright white background area under the left petal. My only suggestion, and it's a minor one, would be to darken slightly the upper left corner as it seems just a tad too bright.   Posted: 08/02/2026 18:59:49

Hi David,

Thank you for your comment and suggestion. I also really like the level of detail that focus stacking gives me with flowers like this, as they have such interesting features in both the petals and the stems.   Posted: 08/24/2026 08:09:55

Lovely poppy image Maria. The petals remind me of crinkled tissue paper. Nice lighting and beautiful colors with a smooth background.   Posted: 08/04/2026 14:40:57

Hi Denise,

Thank you for your comment. I also really like the detail in the petals. Poppies are such interesting flowers to photograph.

This was the first time I planted them in my garden, and I'm already collecting seeds to plant them again next year, so I can enjoy their beauty and have more opportunities to photograph them.   Posted: 08/24/2026 08:13:24

Great composition - the curved stem and angle of the flower. Beautiful bokeh. I love the 'crinkled paper' look of the petals, and nice capture of the reds.   Posted: 08/21/2026 12:34:54

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your nice comment. I'm happy that you like it. And, as you said, reds are not always easy to capture. I took this shot early in the morning, which allowed me to avoid the wind and the harsh light.   Posted: 08/24/2026 08:17:11
