Day Lilies by Dick States

August 2026 - Day Lilies

About the Image(s)

There is one homeowner in town that has hundreds of plants everywhere on her property. Her front yard is full of plants. I had the pleasure of shooting any that I liked. This is one I was able to isolate with a good background.
Taken at f-8 at ISO 400. 1/200 sec with an exposure bias of .5 stop. I was using my older camera a D-200 for this shot. I was using a tripod with a polarizer on the lens.

You captured these day lilies perfectly with the pinkish flowers standing out beautifully against the green background. The composition clearly shows how important the background plays in the overall image. The background looks as if it is in a green mist. Did you do that in post processing or was it like that naturally?   Posted: 08/02/2026 18:39:26

Thanks David. I never do backgrounds in post processing.   Posted: 08/02/2026 18:44:47

There are multiple elements which makes this photo stand out. The composition draws your eye from the lower left up to the center flowers, with the larger unopened bud drawing your eye to the left. (I also have not seen daylilies of this color before.) The lighting is perfect on the flowers. As David mentioned, the background supports the subjects. There also appears to my eye to be some grain or noise in the background (maybe I'm wrong), which I think in this case just adds to its artistic value. Beautiful photo!   Posted: 08/03/2026 21:30:25

Lovely image of these day lilies in their natural environment. The composition captures the flowing curves of the petals leading your eye from one to the other. They seem very "alive" and have beautiful colors. The fact you captured these with a 20 year old camera is wonderful.   Posted: 08/04/2026 14:20:59

Beautiful combination of colors, great depth of field on flowers while maintaining a soft background. The alignment of the flowers and stamen to the top left seem to reach out to the light.   Posted: 08/21/2026 13:18:57

Hi Dick,

You captured these lilies so beautifully. The colour of the background complements the colour of the lilies, and the diagonal composition enhances the flowers beautifully. What I particularly like is how the leaves create a lovely environment around the flowers without taking away their importance.   Posted: 08/21/2026 18:29:53

Thank you, Maria. Appreciate your comment about the leaves. This would not have happened without a polarizer. There was glair off the leaves. I feel the leaves were important to the composition and the image.   Posted: 08/21/2026 21:09:08
