About the Image(s)

This is another orchid from my recent botanical garden outing. For additional background, I shoot with an OM System micro 4/3rds camera, the OM 1 mark II. If anyone is unfamiliar with how this impacts camera settings I thought I'd explain that as well. When setting your aperture, you get a greater depth of field than full frame. This means that when I say my aperture is f3.5 for example, that's a full frame equivalent of f7 (just double the number). It also means that the lenses I use are doubled as well. So my 90mm macro lens actually equals 180mm full frame equivalent. I just thought I'd put that out there so that we are all on the same page regarding results based on our reported camera settings.

So, I shot this image at f3.5, 1/50th sec, ISO 500, with my 90mm macro lens, handheld using available/natural light in the room where the orchids were displayed.

My post processing was done in Lightroom Classic. After basic overall adjustments, cropping, and removing what I considered distractions, I used masks to make selective adjustments to darken the background and reduce highlights. I also reduced highlights on the flower and increased exposure a bit. I added a slight dark vignette, then using Photoshop, added a thin dark green stroke around the edges.

I've been trying to get better at taking what I'm calling "natural portraits" of flowers, where you can see some of their environment without it being too distracting. I attempt that through composition, but also by trying different things in post processing (darkening and/or desaturating backgrounds, reducing clarity, etc.). I've submitted my final image with a somewhat darkened background, but also Original 2 with an even darker background. I'd be interested in your feedback on which you find more effective, or pleasing. There may be just personal preference involved, but I'd still love the feedback!

A lovely and simple shot of an orchid. You captured its essence with the important parts in sharp focus. I prefer Original 2 with the slightly darker background as the leaves on the left are a tad bright and pull my eye from the orchid.   Posted: 04/04/2026 21:14:14

Very nice capture of the orchid! You got all of the important parts of the flower in focus without doing a focus stack. The colors, exposure, and composition are excellent. I agree with David that Original 2 does a better job in keeping the viewer's eye on the flower. My only suggestion is to try using a circular polarizer to reduce the glare the next time you photograph such shiny flowers.   Posted: 04/06/2026 18:06:58

Thanks for the suggestion Kim. I had never considered that before and will give it a try! Just have to be sure to stick my circular polarizer in my bag and leave it there, LOL.   Posted: 04/06/2026 18:38:14

Everything about this orchid shot is great. I too prefer Original 2. Orchid flowers have a waxy surface which reflects light off the petals. A polarizer would work wonders to remove the flair in this image. Put that polarizer on your lens and don't take it off.   Posted: 04/07/2026 00:12:10

Thanks for the feedback Dick! I'll need to grab my polarizers and get to experimenting!   Posted: 04/07/2026 12:24:15

Nice image of the Lady Slipper! I prefer Original 2. I wonder if you took and how other images shot from a different angle would look, maybe a bit higher and to the right, to get more detail of the flower slipper. Just a suggestion. I am going to order a polarizer. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.   Posted: 04/07/2026 18:20:28

Hi Denise,
Very nice image of the lady's slipper. The colours and detail are excellent, revealing all the beauty of this flower. The original version two has my vote too, as the darker background helps to isolate the flower nicely and gives it the importance it deserves.   Posted: 04/12/2026 20:13:56
