About the Image(s)
For this month I decided to shoot some flowers in planters on my deck. This Dahlia caught my eye and I thought it would be more interesting shot from an angle as opposed to straight on. Taken near the end of daylight. I took several at higher f stops to increase DOF but in the end I liked the slightly blurred edges of the petals - for a more 'artistic' look???
Processed in LrC to remove background distractions, exposure/contrast/crop adjustments, and then darkened the background to highlight the flower.
Canon R6II; 100mm macro; f/4.5; 1/20 sec.; ISO 100

A beautifully exposed and composed image of a blanket flower. Your post processing to remove the bright stem and darken the background makes the flower stand out. The center of the flower is sharp. Well done!   Posted: 07/02/2025 21:56:35
Thanks David. I appreciate your comments. Below is the info that didn't make it into the submission. It is titled 'Dahlia'.

Hi Mark,
Lovely! The colors of the dahlia pop against the darkened background. Dahlias are my favorite flowers to photograph. You captured nice details. I like your angle of view. Nicely done.   Posted: 07/10/2025 15:31:54

Hi Mark,
I really enjoy dahlias, and I like how your image makes the dahlia stand out nicely against the dark green background. Your painterly editing of the background really enhances the flower and removes distractions.

Maria, I am trying to add some more 'painterly' backgrounds to some of my photos these days. To me, there is a fine line between pics where everything is tack sharp and those which have too much of that 'dreamy' out of focus look (although that is a matter of personal taste), so I am experimenting. (However, I do love sharp macro flower shots the best.) Thanks for the comments.   Posted: 07/22/2025 15:03:36
Love the composition in this image. At this location of the camera, it shows more detail about the flower and adds interest to the image. Great background showing the leaves darkened works very well. Great lighting.
Was the camera handheld? Auto focus? To my eye the flower is not sharp. The petals on the right back side are sharp then everything else to my eye are soft. I would like to see the center of the flower tack sharp. Interested in your answers to my two questions.

Dick, thanks for the comments. I used a tripod in this case and used manual focus. The wind was not blowing so I could get away with it. I tried to focus on the center of the flower, and took shots at different apertures, including some which were focus stacked, but in the end I liked the 'artistic' look of this shot, with some of the petals out of focus.   Posted: 07/22/2025 14:57:42
