About the Image(s)

I shot this white peony while testing some Nikon Imaging Cloud film recipes. I won't go into any detail what that means as that's a subject all of its own. I liked the clean, bright almost transluscent effect it gave the flower against the blue sky. I used Photoshop to remove some distractions and lighten the shadows. Shot with a Nikon Zf camera and an adapted F-mount 60mm f/3.5 macro lens. The exposure was 1/1000 sec @ f/11 and ISO 400.

Nice shot, David. The light and airy look emit a calming mood. The details on the back of the peony are brought out nicely against pastel pink and blue. Well done.   Posted: 07/10/2025 17:03:09

Thank you, Barbara. "Light and airy," is an accurate description. I'm still learning how to use film recipes for Nikon. I've used them for Fujifilm cameras, but Nikon's recipes aren't as "developed."   Posted: 07/11/2025 23:20:34

Hi David,
I like that you focused on the little details, such as the small green leaf and the tiny pink petals behind the flower, which you've beautifully isolated against the blue sky.

My only suggestion would be to continue exploring your composition by concentrating all the attention in that area, creating a strong abstraction of the flower.   Posted: 07/13/2025 19:40:40

Thank you for the suggestion, Maria. I guess I was more focused on the film recipe effect than composition. I'll play with the image from a composition standpoint.   Posted: 07/13/2025 19:49:47

I like to check out the back sides of many flowers. Sometimes as is the case here the backside can be more interesting than the front. Like the colors against the white with the white against the blue. Well done, keep looking at all sides of flowers.   Posted: 07/18/2025 16:47:21

Thank you, Dick. Generally, I don't shoot backs of flowers as it seems somewhat gimmicky. In this case, the front of the flower was just pure white, and, although there was good texture, it just didn't work photographically. I liked the complementary green and magenta colors in the back of the flower.   Posted: 07/19/2025 10:52:41

David, have been traveling so a late review. I agree that this pic is 'light and airy' also. Beautiful. At first, I thought it might have been taken with a lightpad! I also love the soft detail on the back of the flower. I would try a different composition, with less of the stem and more of the sky on the sides and see what you think. It might frame the flower better.   Posted: 07/27/2025 12:09:27

Yes, good suggestion about more sky on the sides. It might be improved as a square crop.   Posted: 07/27/2025 14:14:19
