September 2023 - Golden Forest Floor

About the Image(s)

This is something totally different I wanted to submit this month. I took this photo in the forest in Seabeck, WA. The light was coming in from the ocean into a dark forest with brown leaves on the ground. I wanted to do a "moving camera" technique when I took it with my iphone 13 pro max. Data on the photo: 1.57 mm (in 35 mm would the 46 mm), Exposure 2.0 seconds, F1.8, ISO 50, shutter priority, and pattern metering. I processed it on site with the Snapseed 2.23 app. Then later in photoshop I had to immediately increase the image size, as I wanted to print it, did some ACR, tried to denoise it some, and did some burning on white spots that seemed too bright. This summer I saw some fabulous abstract prints using these tools and techniques, and I had fun trying it. Thoughts, feedback, and how to improve it?

Rita, I am new to all of this so while I am not able to comment on how to improve this, let me say this - I love what you have captured and it makes me want to learn more about this technique. The colors are vibrant and the angle is drawing me into the woods, heading toward the ocean! What a lovely photograph with so much interest.   Posted: 09/06/2023 18:45:12

Rita,
I too like the colors and the change in color palate from top to bottom. These photo camera movement pics are tricky - too much movement and it is impossible to tell what the subject was; too little and it just looks like a blurry image. I think you got it right.   Posted: 09/07/2023 19:47:26

Dean, thanks for those comments. This has been so much fun playing with this on both my Sony and iphone this summer, since seeing some expertly done movement photos that sell for thousands! Serious question, do you think I could put this in a creative reality category, and PSÃ… folks would not completely reject it? Second serious question, I tried to darken some of the brighter white spots, and with the texture on it, it came out "smudged." You can see that in this photo, but I stopped there. Any tips on how I might darken the bright white spots, or would just leaving it alone would be better. The texture would be there, instead of the burr.   Posted: 09/08/2023 13:04:53

Sure, submit it and see what happens. I might just use a brush with reduced exposure to darken some of the light areas on the perimeter or use a vignette.   Posted: 09/09/2023 19:33:51

I dig intentional camera motion (ICM) shots when they're done well. Dean's right that the amount of motion has to be just right so as to be recognizable, but...changed. I think this is done well. I can't really critique it that much though, because it is so highly stylized. But I can tell you captured trees, and that's really the point I think. Good on you, and kudos for stepping into a new technique.   Posted: 09/09/2023 19:24:06

Damon, that is such a beautiful area - Seabeck. I will print and use this photo, and will always have fond memories of being there. Sorry we missed the eagles, but got this instead.   Posted: 09/28/2023 23:08:58

Hi Rita,
Nice ICM shot. Pleasing colors. The bright areas look ok, as they flow with the rest of the image. I think it looks great, and no changes are needed. Good job.   Posted: 09/14/2023 08:44:14

I love the ICM shots done in camera versus photoshop. You have a great eye, you analyzed the situation and visualized it differently. I love the way the leaves on ground lead you up into and through the trees! Excellent job with the composition.   Posted: 09/28/2023 15:40:45
