Sandhill Crane by Anne Sandler

April 2025 - Sandhill Crane

About the Image(s)

This was taken in January of this year. I was lucky that my friend and I found a bunch of Sandhills close to the road so they were in reach for my lens. This one was getting ready to fly, but was still. Otherwise I would have gotten a blurred image! Judging from my shutter speed I was lucky I got this. Topaz helped with the sharpening. I'm still having trouble switching from a Fuji to a Tamron lens.

Anne,
It is usually a better image image if you can catch the bird doing something and you got this one with a leg lifted and wings getting extended. So that makes for a more interesting bird image. I might crop in from the right a bit to get rid of that upstanding grass/reed at the bottom right.

Anne,

Capturing birds is always a challenge,; well spotted and good reflexes! I did the same thing with my photo this month; I did not adjust my camera settings when I saw a photo opportunity because I thought I would lose the moment. We both got photos we could work with in post-processing but not necessarily ideal ones for competition.
There is not much adjustment to be done that I can see. I probably would remove the little bits of floating debris from the water in the right hand corner and then to the left of the bird in the middle section. Then, I would mask the eye and see if I could saturate the color more to make it more visible and set it off from the orange around the eye. The eye is more yellow. It does not have a light capture, but even so, it would be nice to make it more prominent.   Posted: 04/15/2025 16:22:40
