Lake Travis by Dean Ginther

March 2025 - Lake Travis

About the Image(s)

This is a photo I took a couple of days ago. It is looking at Lake Travis (TX) from about 200 feet agl, close to where we live (during the winter). It was taken with a DJI Mini 4 drone with a 12 megapixel camera which can be set in a 48 meg picture mode by combining four 12 meg images. I downloaded the 8064 x 4536 image and did a few minor edits in LR. The Exif info shows 1/6000, ISO 120, 24mm, f/1.7, 24mm lens (these were auto settings). I don't do drone photos very often and there is a bit of a learning curve which I am working on. In a few weeks we have a trip out west so I am hoping to make more use of it in the wide open spaces. I didn't upload the original because it is basically the same.

I'm impressed, Dean, with your ability to use a drone. You certainly captured the scope of the area. I can't comment on any details re the drone itself. I think you will have some great success when using it in the wide open spaces of the west.
My general comments would be to open the shadows a bit. It's hard to tell about noise, etc. but the sky doesn't look noisy and has lovely exposure.

Thanks; more of a test shot than anything.   Posted: 03/10/2025 21:13:31

Since you have not indicated what specific image you wanted to capture before sending the drone up, it is hard to assess if you were successful or not. Compositionally, the horizon line is almost in the middle of the photo, which ordinarily makes it hard for the eye to know which half to work with first. But the winding water eventually leads one from the bottom left through to the top right of the bottom half more or less. The three vertical strokes- the road, driveway, and dirt gulley- I find distracting. I agree with Erin that the land areas would benefit from opening the shadows and possibly by adding some vibrance. It looks promising for capturing some stunning landscapes in the west.   Posted: 03/10/2025 21:00:01

Hi Dean, I am impressed that you could do this with the drone. I have only seen others try to use, and I hope your trip out west is successful in being able to use it again. I really like the perspective of the lake and land, and of course know how low the water is. I agree with Erin to open the shadows on the land and maybe crop a little sky.   Posted: 03/15/2025 13:53:11
