It’s a nice asparagus fern. Actually the subject here is the black background. Using a low ISO and SS I adjusted F Stop until everything was black then reversed until branch came into view. Sunlight was coming in at just the right angle which made it easy. I’ve heard you can use flash lighting and synch speed settings to achieve black backgrounds on many subjects. Only way to find out is to try.

I like how you isolated the one fern and it works very well on the black background. I also like how the tip of the fern begins to fade into the background. The contrast of colors works well. I wouldn't change anything.   Posted: 07/21/2024 22:48:40

The green fern works well on the black back ground, and nice crop as well. Good technique for getting the black by controlling the light. I did the flash thing by accident once; took a shot of a fall leaf on the tree in late after with a on camera flash, provide enough light to show the leaf but SS was fast enough not register any light in the background.   Posted: 07/22/2024 23:51:27

Hi Andrew - great experiment and great result! I feel the same as Jessica that the tip fading into the background adds to the overall effect. I also like the composition you have selected with your crop.   Posted: 07/25/2024 00:00:02

Nice details and the fern looks good against the dark background. Good lighting and color, too.   Posted: 07/25/2024 16:54:53

Really great crop and composition with the lone branch coming in from the lower left and being angled. The black background against the bright green makes for good contrast. Thanks for telling us how you got the black background. Like mentioned above, the fading tip is good. I would not change a thing.   Posted: 07/25/2024 20:58:59
