Basement Still Life by Bob Crocker

February 2025 - Basement Still Life

About the Image(s)

We've had our first real snow storm this past week; six inches of the white stuff. So I spent some time in the Studio (aka basement) gathering up some odds and ends for a still-life type shot. Wanted to spend some time working with the off-camera flash also. For this shot I used f5.6 because I wanted there to be a quick drop off In DOF and have softness in the "vegetation". Main lighting came from the right with one diffused flash, and a white board on the left to bounce some light back into the shadows. Editing was done ON1 Photo RAW2025. ISO was 200 for 1 sec exposure but backed that off with EV -3. Did some basic slider adjustments in the Develop module pulling the whites back up after that EV push. Did some dodging and burning to get lighting/texture where I wanted on the oval photograph. Add some dynamic contrast to some of the "plants" and the wood. Added a texture mostly on the gray sheet the items sat on to give depth and interest."

You did a great job with the lighting - very nice. You have great focus, textures and details as well. It's a great photo. The only thing that bothers me some is the green hanging plant on the far left that is cut off. Do you have the whole plant in your original. If not, I would consider cropping it out.   Posted: 02/12/2025 16:03:00

Thanks for the comment Cindy. I debated on the green thing. Thought since it was soft, maybe it could just be an accent border. But yeah, it's distracting, I can probably clone it out.   Posted: 02/12/2025 19:31:52
