Last of the Maple by Bob Crocker

November 2024 - Last of the Maple

About the Image(s)

Our two maple trees dropped most of the remaining leaves last week during a heavy rain. Several fell on the back deck and this one I found interesting. I placed it on the black door matt as a background. It was late afternoon and windy so I used a high 1000 ISO, 1/400 sec at f3.5. Processed in ON1 Photo RAW 2025, adding some sharpening and dynamic contrast just to the leaf. Gave the leaf a good boast in vibrancy since it had faded a little on the tree. As a final touch a texture was blended into the black background.

I love this! Your details and texture are great. The angle of the leaf is good and the backgrund color and texture goes so well with your subject. I love the fall and I love your photo!   Posted: 11/19/2024 16:15:02

I really like the contrast of textures. The weave of the mat and the lines of the leaf make this a very interesting image. I also like the contrast in colors, while still feeling like they are in the same color family.   Posted: 11/22/2024 00:11:47

The image has great depth of field and the leaf is super sharp. I think that you selected a good leaf, as it is not perfect, and appears to be drying up. To me, that helps with the story of fall and that the greens of summer are gone. As mentioned above, the composition is good with the leaf at an angle. I like that the texture goes from light to dark, from lower left to upper right. I think that the texture is good, but that it should be overall blurred the same as it is in the lower left. To me, the texture around the leaf distracts from the sharpness of the leaf.   Posted: 11/23/2024 18:42:33

Thanks Tom, good point about the texture sharpness. I'm going to revisit the editing darkroom.   Posted: 11/23/2024 22:22:39
