About the Image(s)

My image this month was an experiment. My daughter visited from the US and brought a Lensbaby velvet over for me - very exciting! I have had to learn how to keep sharp detail where I want it; unfortunately my first images were all softness with no details at all in focus.
Settings for this image were 1/250sec, ISO 200, centre-weighted metering. Focal length was not automatically recorded, so I now know to take notice of what I use when shooting with this lens.
It's spring here, so flowers are blooming - this image is of a clivia flower. As you can see, it is still soft throughout, but I liked it and thought it was worth processing. I cropped to a square format, and used a series of curves layers to enhance colour and contrast. I decided to try a black and white version, so used a black and white adjustment layer and a levels adjustment. I masked out some of the background that was too busy, using a black layer. Finally, I added a slight vignette using a masked curves layer.
I really like the black and white version, but have provided the colour version also for your feedback.

The flower looks like it is glowing. I don't have a lens baby but have seen goreous flower photos from thise who use it. You have a soft and appealing image. While the monochrome is nice, I prefer the lovely colors in your color photo. The complimentary colors of blue and orange add something to the image.   Posted: 11/06/2024 16:25:35

I think desaturating the color was the right move. I like the overall soft quality of the image. There is also a wonderful abstract quality to the image. You can see it is an image of flowers, but you do not know exactly where they are displayed.   Posted: 11/22/2024 00:10:25

Nice image and well processed. I prefer the monochrome presentation, I think it blends better with the softness of the petals. The blues in the color image are too distracting IMHO. Never have used a LensBaby either but have seen results from others; can be nice for that soft, glowing effect.   Posted: 11/22/2024 21:01:18

I prefer the monochrome. The colors are great, but they over power the subject. I like the composition with the sharp part in the upper right. The out of focus flower in the lower left is leading us to the sharp part. The tones are great, going from black to the white of the center of the upper flower, without anything appearing to be blown out. I have never used a Lensbaby, but it looks like you have a new lens to experiment with and learn more about using. I think that it is great for photographers to try new things, as it helps to keep us interested in photography.   Posted: 11/23/2024 18:34:06

I like your approach as an experiment and the results are outstanding. A very interesting plant and similar to the orchid. The monochrome flow of blacks and greys lead to the bright center of interest has its own qualities. Being the Fire Lily I prefer the cool colors leading to the brilliant center of focus. Also compliments on camera angle and composition.   Posted: 11/29/2024 00:43:23
