If you use an iPhone, you’ll know that the camera defaults to “Live” mode - meaning the iPhone captures a three-second video when you tap the button. One of the uses of that video is to create a long exposure image. For this shot, I managed to hold the iPhone still enough to show the irrigation water flowing while the surroundings remain relatively still. There is some movement in the vegetation on the banks due to the air stirring over the moving water.

The possibilities with Live mode are fun! Loop is fun, but hard to show in a single photo. Thanks for the reminder to use live mode more often. Posted: 08/03/2026 19:25:54
"Loop" is neat, and in some cases, it looks like continuous movie. "Bounce" can be funny since the movie cycles between forward and reverse. As you said, neither makes a still image, though.

Thank you. It would have been better if I had a larger water flow, but here in the semi-arid west, there isn't a lot of water flowing. The only issue using Live Mode is that the user has to be able to hold the phone still for about three seconds. A fence or a rock could help with that.

Live mode worked well for you in showing the water movement. It's not something I use often but it comes in handy at times and this is a good example. Is there a walking path that follows all side the irrigation ditch? Does the irrigation ditch water farm land? Posted: 08/13/2026 23:24:47
Thank you. A larger flow would have made a better demonstration, but we get what we get.
In larger ditches, there may be a path alongside. The ditch rider has to have access to the trash fences in the spring, but those tend to be in the larger flows before the water reaches the smaller flows like this one.
This water is headed for area farming activities like crops and cattle. The water from the stream that feeds this ditch also goes out onto the flatter land to the east for corn, beans, wheat, veggies, and so on.

The Live view worked well as all the image is sharp. I wish the bridge was not the first thing the eye sees as that's not really the main subject of the shot. Still, its all well exposed so your hand held effort paid off. Posted: 08/19/2026 16:02:33
Thank you. That bridge is one of the brightest things in the image, so as you said, it draws the viewer's attention. I suppose I could have tried to darken it, but mobile apps have some limitations. I might have cropped-in to re-direct attention, but I liked the big tree in the background.
