False Spirea by Robert Barley

July 2025 - False Spirea

About the Image(s)

I found this crazy perennial during a photo walk with friends. The wild growth seems to go in all directions at once. I thought the energy and the color were snap-worthy. My iPad says it is a "False Spirea." Why it's "false," I couldn't say. Just a little contrast, a mild crop, and a small border were added.

Beautiful Robert. False Spirea is another plant I have never heard of. Dicks Japanese version is another Spirea. I love the color that you were able to maintain. Jerry   Posted: 07/05/2025 13:32:35

An interesting coincidence. Your plant doesn't look like other spireas.I am not sure if I see small clusters of bloom or not, but they may look like other spirea blossoms. The leaves are certainly different. I think the plant is a variety of Astilbe. A quick check online showed several examples.   Posted: 07/05/2025 14:23:31

So, what comments do you have about the photo?
Thanks.   Posted: 07/06/2025 17:09:10

I like the photo with it's "crazy quilt" pattern. The three probable flower clusters are hard to see and a bit distracting, but important for species I D. Given the black background within the image, the border is very useful.
Are the leaves in the foreground really larger than others or is that a result of camera angle? They do help give the image depth.   Posted: 07/06/2025 17:25:19

It is a crazy quilt. That is the point of the photo. It wasn't intended to be a plant identification shot. I just mentioned what Siri said it is, but that really isn't important to me.

The foreground leaves are naturally larger. I assumed they were just older. I held the phone pretty much parallel to the leaf cluster.
Thanks

I really like the multiple angles of the branches and the different tones of green. I'm wondering about a little tighter crop and also what it would look like in B&W. Great find and capture.   Posted: 07/14/2025 01:11:54

Black and white is a great idea. I'm the guy who's supposed to be a real BW fan, and I didn't think of that. I tried it using PS and cycling through the options. Removing the color helps to feature the shapes of the leaves. It is much more graphical that way, and I like it. Thanks for the suggestion.

At first the eye jumps around but then settles in the center where that bit of color and lighter leaf is. The overall impact is effective.   Posted: 07/14/2025 14:01:21

Thank you. I cropped it so that lighter leaf area would, more or less, be in the lower left third intersection so the viewer's eyes had a place to land.
