Sunset 0ver Torrey Pines by Rita Blockman

February 2025 - Sunset 0ver Torrey Pines

About the Image(s)

We are in CA for the winter, and I just took this photo at Torrey Pines. I am curious whether I should have focused on the lonely tree more. I did remember to resize it this time. Comments would be great.
Thank you very much Rita.

Rita, A very nice image. I love the reflections on the water.

Here are a few ideas that I would do if this image were mine. In Snapseed I would try and use Tune image and use a little Ambiance which will bring out the sky. After doing this I would make some adjustments on the top of the sky. These are just things that I would play with. They may not work? Jerry   Posted: 02/01/2025 15:22:53

A very lovely image that is nice as is. You could have a look at cropping the top a bit, which would give more emphasis to the foreground. That depends on what you want your viewer to appreciate most.   Posted: 02/01/2025 19:56:28

I appreciate your suggestion Richard. I will play around with it. Thank you.   Posted: 02/02/2025 05:52:58

Nice colorful and peaceful scene. The notch in the foreground leads the viewer's eyes into the scene. The ocean looks vast as it rolls out before the viewer. The photo may be a little over-saturated, but that's a quibble. I think shooting from a lower angle might have improved it, but I wasn't there to see the obstructions nearer the ground.

Your question about the composition is valid. In my opinion the photo lacks a central point of focus. The water is so calm it isn't especially interesting. The sun is so high that it is out of the frame. There isn't a fascinating foreground object. A boat out on the water, for example, would have added scale and context.

Just my opinion.

In my opinion I would not put more focus on the tree as it looks dead and not a good subject. I like how the V in the hills leads the eye to the reflection in the water. I think you could crop about half of the sky out as there is nothing interesting and the interesting color is near the horizon. It seems to be a little over saturated in the rocks but that could also be caused by the golden light of the sitting sun. I was just watching a photography presentation today and the topic was "what is your subject" when photographing something. I'm not sure what you main subject is.   Posted: 02/06/2025 00:18:59

The only pine at Torrey Pines appears to be dead. Hopefully it wasn't harmed by any wildfires. The sweeping beauty of the ocean is always a draw. It's so strange to see ocean surface is so flat. Also missing big crashing waves in New Jersey. Atlantic Ocean currently looking flat like a lake as your view of Pacific Ocean. The waves are what make ocean scenes compelling.   Posted: 02/06/2025 16:41:40

Cutting some sky would make a horizontal format which works well on this image. The Brush tool in Snapseed could be used to selectively increase the temperature on the water and then also increase some color on the sky. The "v" shape on the rocks is a great attention getter and takes the eye right into the rest of the frame.   Posted: 02/07/2025 10:57:09
